Senior Product Affordability Engineer

Ford•Palo Alto, CA
•$138,800 - $232,700•Hybrid

About The Position

Ford Motor Company is building a capability that brings engineering, manufacturing, supply-chain insight, economics, and data together early in product development, while design choices are still open. This role is for a curious, technically grounded problem solver who can understand how products are made, identify the factors that materially affect cost and value, and help teams make better decisions. Relevant backgrounds may include engineering, manufacturing, cost engineering, technical purchasing or supply chain, supplier development, industrialization, and value engineering. The Senior Product Affordability Engineer works across traditional boundaries and partners with product and design engineers, suppliers, purchasing, manufacturing teams, and other stakeholders. The role leads cross-functional affordability and value-engineering studies, uses cost models and market information to develop actionable alternatives, and helps shape how affordability is integrated into vehicle development. It also develops reusable models, data, methods, automation, and tools to expand organizational capability.

Requirements

  • A strong technical foundation and practical understanding of how products are designed and manufactured.
  • Depth in at least one relevant engineering, manufacturing, supply-chain, supplier, value-engineering, or cost domain, together with curiosity to work beyond that specialty.
  • Ability to identify the key variables in a complex problem and develop a useful point of view without waiting for perfect information.
  • Comfort working directly with engineers, suppliers, purchasing, manufacturing teams, and other stakeholders to turn analysis into decisions.
  • An ownership mindset, energy for ambiguous problems, ability to learn quickly, and capacity to create a path where one does not already exist.
  • Analytical and digital fluency, with an interest in using data, modeling, automation, and emerging tools to solve problems at greater scale.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States; employment eligibility verification is required at hire.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside product and design engineers on vehicle decisions while alternatives are still open.
  • Explore how product requirements, design choices, manufacturing processes, supply-chain realities, and economics relate.
  • Challenge established assumptions constructively, using engineering judgment and facts to help teams find better solutions.
  • Use cost models, benchmarks, supplier and market information, data, and digital tools at the level of detail appropriate to each decision.
  • Lead cross-functional affordability and value-engineering studies from an open question to a clear point of view and actionable alternatives.
  • Turn complex or recurring questions into reusable models, data, methods, automation, or tools.
  • Help integrate affordability into vehicle development, rather than measuring cost only after decisions are made.
