About The Position

The Public Interest Technology (PIT) Crew at the NYC Office of Technology and Innovation builds technology, products, and services intended to make New York City more affordable. The team designs, builds, and launches public-facing products for New Yorkers. Senior Product Engineers work across the stack to design, build, and ship resident-facing products. This is a hands-on role involving close collaboration with product managers, designers, user researchers, policy teams, and other city employees to turn problem statements into working products and services. The role includes writing code across systems, integrating city agency data sources and legacy systems, and working with policy and legal stakeholders. Engineers also help lead the team’s engineering practices, including the use of generative coding tools, production readiness, documentation, responsible handoffs for production support, and balancing delivery speed with the reliability standards expected of city government services. The position is based in Brooklyn, NY. The stated day shift may vary, including possible weekend and night/evening shifts, because of the technical duties in a 24/7 operation.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, mathematics, or a related field and six years of satisfactory full-time experience related to enterprise architecture, solutions architecture, network architecture, and/or IT infrastructure systems; or a baccalaureate degree and ten years of such experience; or equivalent education and/or experience.
  • The ability to work various shifts, including weekends and/or nights/evenings, may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship applications from concept to launch, owning product components end-to-end or focusing on frontend, backend, mobile, or data pipeline components as needed.
  • Move products through rapid prototyping, MVP iteration, pilots, and public launch, making pragmatic tradeoffs among scope, quality, and timing.
  • Build integrations with government data sources, including APIs, flat-file feeds, open data portals, and legacy systems.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, engineers, and other OTI employees on product decisions; participate in user research and design reviews; and contribute to scoping and prioritization.
  • Coordinate with the wider OTI team on hosting, performance testing, accessibility audits, and security reviews to meet city quality and production standards.
  • Work with agency staff, policy advisors, and legal counsel to translate eligibility rules and regulations into clear, accurate product logic.
  • Write technical documentation, runbooks, and architecture notes to support maintenance and future development.
  • Contribute reusable patterns, components, and infrastructure to improve the speed of future projects.
  • Help shape the engineering culture of the team through code review, mentorship, and onboarding future hires.
  • Perform special projects and initiatives as assigned.

Benefits

  • The job description states that OTI offers great benefits but does not specify them.
