About The Position

CBC Prince Edward Island is looking for a senior producer to lead the current affairs teams and build strong collaboration between radio programmers and the wider multi-platform newsroom, including digital publishing and video creators. As Senior Producer, Current Affairs, you work with the executive producer and Managing Editor to manage the development of staff. You will guide and support on-air talent. You are committed to developing relationships to strengthen journalism and content and CBC P.E.I.. You have ideas for reaching and growing a new audience for CBC. You are keen to collaborate with the rest of the leadership team at CBC P.E.I, the Atlantic Creative Content Unit and other teams across the region and network. You’re an innovative and adaptive programmer. Your leadership style inspires others to experiment and challenge traditional thinking about programming and content creation. You are a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making. Your decisions and leadership are based on specific goals which are clearly communicated to your teams. You have an in-depth understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and are responsible for ensuring your team functions within these guidelines. You are naturally collaborative. Your ability to build relationships helps ensure the success of your teams and the station alike. You champion team success, and find creative solutions when issues arise. The people who work on your teams know what you expect of them. You will also strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected on our programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You will prioritize audience engagement and community connections, and look for new ways to reach people where they are. This role requires full time on site presence.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated talent as a producer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
  • Highly developed writing, vetting, and production skills.
  • Passion for local storytelling and the ability to identify relevant, audience-focused stories, which reflect issues being discussed by people in the province.
  • Experience leading teams through periods of significant change.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and adapt to audience trends and data.
  • Advanced critical thinking skills.
  • Strong understanding of CBC’s journalistic standards and practices and their applications in a wide variety of contexts is an asset.
  • Quick to react and respond to breaking stories.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgement and long term strategic planning.
  • Proven ability to foster a vibrant and inclusive team culture.
  • A mindset of continuous learning and constant evolution.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required, including weekends on call.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the development and review of all CBC P.E.I. radio programs and the “This is P.E.I.” podcast
  • Supports development of journalists’ skills as it relates to strategic content development.
  • Identifies and coordinates opportunities for community engagement.
  • Identifies and develops emerging talent within and outside of CBC News.
  • Provides regular feedback to employees.
  • Makes daily staffing and scheduling recommendations.
  • Closely monitors audience and industry trends, and develops ideas and approaches positioned against future content opportunities.
  • Highly skilled in content production.
