About The Position

The Ontario Service is a new division of CBC News that unites programs and content serving provincial and regional audiences, with an emphasis on audio. The Senior Producer of the Ontario Service is the superconnector who leads and coordinates this service. They provide editorial leadership for Fresh Air, a provincial weekend morning audio program, and Ontario Morning, a weekday morning program serving communities primarily in and around Barrie, Peterborough and Kingston. The Senior Producer also ensures that the best of the audio content currently being created across Ontario is effectively distributed among Ontario newsrooms so that it reaches more people. They appreciate the complex diversity of lived experience in this immense province – the many things that divide and unite us – and they know how to ensure stories speak to people here no matter if they live in a huge city or a small fly-in community. To be the successful candidate, you must be a journalist with excellent editorial judgement, an in-depth understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, and a track record of making great radio and news content. You understand how newsrooms operate and how communication works best between stations. You approach your job with urgency when news breaks and find creative ways to make sure the story is being told in a timely manner and by the people most impacted. You are extremely organized and know how to build and refine systems that will elegantly and efficiently serve newsrooms across the province. You are a communicator extraordinaire and creative problem solver who remains calm under pressure. You are an experienced, solutions-oriented leader who knows how to work with many different types of people. You set your colleagues up for success and celebrate their wins; you uplift not only the content produced but also the reporters who work hard to tell stories that matter across Ontario. The Senior Producer must be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of decision-making. You understand that those needs differ whether it’s the morning, afternoon or weekend, and that our commitment is to be one step ahead of the questions people are asking at those times. You strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected in our programming, especially those from people and communities who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. This is a full time, permanent role based in Toronto. The schedule is Sunday to Thursday and full on-site presence is required. This is a new role and will be subject to evaluation and adjustment over its first year.

Requirements

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • At least seven (7) years’ experience of which three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
  • Solid journalistic skills, with highly developed writing for broadcast and vetting experience.
  • Passion for local storytelling and the ability to identify relevant, audience-focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by people in the province.
  • Excellent problem solving, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A sense of humour is essential.
  • Advanced critical thinking and organizational skills.
  • A mindset of continuous learning and constant evolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to react and respond to breaking news.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills, with the demonstrated ability to mentor and encourage creativity.
  • Highly developed audio production skills and ability to produce a variety of program formats.
  • Strong audio editing skills.
  • A demonstrated understanding of journalistic standards and practices.
  • Knowledge of the diverse regions of Ontario and experience telling the stories of underrepresented communities.
  • Proven track record of ensuring a diversity of voices is reflected in programming.
  • A keen eye and ear for stories and story development for both news and current affairs.
  • Ability to make decisions under constant deadline pressure.
  • Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities; to plan and prioritize; to analyze complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Ability to work long and unpredictable hours as needed, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Provide editorial oversight for Fresh Air and Ontario Morning
  • Identify and oversee distribution of provincial and regional content – including interviews, debriefs, and tape – among stations across the province.
  • Vet local scripts to ensure they speak to a provincial audience
  • As needed, cut and distribute audio from shows that could work for other newsrooms
  • Act as point of contact and coordination between local newsrooms and local and provincial current affairs shows across the province.
  • Liaise with our Queen’s Park team to program and distribute live and packaged audio content
  • Coordinate with teams across CBC News in breaking news situations in Ontario to ensure newsrooms are served with relevant content
  • As needed, assist with breaking news coverage
  • Communicate with and share Ontario content with Syndicated Audio as appropriate (talk tapes, paks, music, etc.)
  • Support Ontario weekend copy editor
  • Ensure teams adhere to the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
