The Ontario Service is a new division of CBC News that unites programs and content serving provincial and regional audiences, with an emphasis on audio. The Senior Producer of the Ontario Service is the superconnector who leads and coordinates this service. They provide editorial leadership for Fresh Air, a provincial weekend morning audio program, and Ontario Morning, a weekday morning program serving communities primarily in and around Barrie, Peterborough and Kingston. The Senior Producer also ensures that the best of the audio content currently being created across Ontario is effectively distributed among Ontario newsrooms so that it reaches more people. They appreciate the complex diversity of lived experience in this immense province – the many things that divide and unite us – and they know how to ensure stories speak to people here no matter if they live in a huge city or a small fly-in community. To be the successful candidate, you must be a journalist with excellent editorial judgement, an in-depth understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, and a track record of making great radio and news content. You understand how newsrooms operate and how communication works best between stations. You approach your job with urgency when news breaks and find creative ways to make sure the story is being told in a timely manner and by the people most impacted. You are extremely organized and know how to build and refine systems that will elegantly and efficiently serve newsrooms across the province. You are a communicator extraordinaire and creative problem solver who remains calm under pressure. You are an experienced, solutions-oriented leader who knows how to work with many different types of people. You set your colleagues up for success and celebrate their wins; you uplift not only the content produced but also the reporters who work hard to tell stories that matter across Ontario. The Senior Producer must be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of decision-making. You understand that those needs differ whether it’s the morning, afternoon or weekend, and that our commitment is to be one step ahead of the questions people are asking at those times. You strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected in our programming, especially those from people and communities who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. This is a full time, permanent role based in Toronto. The schedule is Sunday to Thursday and full on-site presence is required. This is a new role and will be subject to evaluation and adjustment over its first year.
