About The Position

The Senior Principal Scientist serves as a senior scientific and technology leader across Inflammation Research, defining and executing integrated strategies that connect human biology, computation, AI-enabled reasoning, preclinical models, and experimental testing to improve the quality, speed, and scalability of therapeutic discovery. The role provides scientific leadership for discovery programs, technology platforms, and strategic initiatives, and guides program strategy, milestones, experimental prioritization, risk assessment, and resolution of complex scientific and technical issues. The position develops human-biology-led therapeutic hypotheses and connects evidence from human genetics, multi-omics, single-cell and spatial data, clinical observations, electronic or real-world data where appropriate, and experiments. It leverages AI-enabled approaches, including machine learning and agentic workflows, to synthesize data, identify mechanisms, prioritize targets, understand variant biology, design experiments, and refine scientific models. The scientist partners with computational and data scientists, engineers, preclinical, clinical, and translational scientists, and modality teams. The role identifies and implements emerging technologies that can advance inflammation research, including in vivo perturbation screens, high-content imaging, functional genomics, phenotypic screens, advanced human tissue models, scalable perturbational systems for automation, and multimodal data integration. It also mentors colleagues, communicates scientific findings and recommendations to varied audiences, and builds external scientific and technological eminence through collaboration and scholarly or technical contributions.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree (PhD), PharmD, or MD (and relevant postdoctoral experience where applicable) and 3 years of computational biology and multi-omics data integration experience; or a master’s degree and 6 years of such experience; or a bachelor’s degree and 8 years of such experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with considerable latitude, establish objectives, integrate activities across projects, and make high-quality decisions within a function or department.
  • Excellence in project leadership and ability to balance scientific rigor, strategic focus, urgency, adaptability, and operational execution.
  • Experience leading cross-functional scientific teams or serving as lead scientist or technological resource for programs, platforms, or capabilities.
  • Broad knowledge of leading experimental and computational biology and ability to integrate both experimental and computational approaches.
  • Track record of solving complex scientific problems through ingenuity, creativity, rigorous experimentation, quantitative reasoning, and integration of diverse evidence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to explain complex science, data limitations, uncertainty, and recommendations to technical and senior leadership audiences.
  • Commitment to coaching and mentoring, sharing knowledge, collegial behavior, and building a connected, inclusive, and inspiring environment.
  • Deep expertise in inflammation, immunology, tissue biology, human disease biology, computational biology, preclinical models, systems biology, imaging, bioengineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools, agentic workflows, advanced analytics, quantitative modeling, or multimodal data integration to generate and test biological hypotheses.
  • Strong record of designing or applying human-relevant experimental systems, such as primary cells, murine models, patient-derived tissues, organotypic models, co-cultures, perturbational systems, functional genomics, imaging, single-cell, spatial, or multi-omic approaches.
  • Ability to identify where technology can significantly advance biological understanding and convert concepts into robust, reproducible, and scalable research capabilities.
  • Experience advancing drug discovery programs and connecting mechanisms to target selection, modality, biomarkers, translational strategy, clinical differentiation, and portfolio value.
  • Evidence of scientific influence beyond an immediate team, such as cross-functional leadership, external collaborations, invited presentations, lead or senior authorship in publications, patents, or widely adopted technological methods.

Responsibilities

  • Provide scientific leadership for discovery programs, technology platforms, and strategic initiatives integrating experimental biology and computational science.
  • Lead cross-functional teams, create clarity in evolving environments, and connect organizational expertise to deliver results.
  • Define human-biology-led therapeutic hypotheses and coordinate computational analyses and decisive experiments.
  • Integrate human genetics, multi-omics, single-cell and spatial data, clinical observations, electronic or real-world data where appropriate, and experimental evidence to identify actionable mechanisms.
  • Use AI-enabled analytical approaches, including machine learning and agentic workflows, to synthesize literature and internal data, identify therapeutic mechanisms, prioritize targets, understand variant biology, design experiments, and refine scientific models.
  • Partner with computational and data scientists, engineers, preclinical, clinical and translational scientists, and modality teams.
  • Define and guide program strategy, milestones, experimental prioritization, and risk assessment; resolve complex scientific and technical issues.
  • Design, direct, analyze, and interpret rigorous experimental studies that interrogate target biology and support drug discovery.
  • Ensure scientific quality and delivery against longer-term objectives.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies to advance and scale inflammation research, including in vivo perturbation screens, high-content imaging, functional genomics, phenotypic screens, advanced human tissue models, scalable perturbational systems for automation, and multimodal data integration.
  • Identify scientific, technological, and industry trends and translate them into opportunities for programs, capabilities, and departmental strategy.
  • Mentor colleagues and provide scientific and technical guidance across functions while fostering an inclusive, connected, curious, and high-performing culture.
  • Communicate complex science, uncertainty, and recommendations to project teams, senior leaders, governance forums, and external scientific audiences.
  • Build external scientific and technological eminence through collaborations, conference participation, publications, patents, and other reviewed scientific or technical outputs.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive employee benefits package, including a Retirement and Savings Plan with generous company contributions, group medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, and flexible spending accounts.
  • Discretionary annual bonus program, or a sales-based incentive plan for field sales representatives.
  • Stock-based long-term incentives.
  • Award-winning time-off plans.
  • Flexible work models where possible.
