Experimental Quantum Scientist

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory•Laurel, MD

About The Position

The Experimental Quantum Scientist will help grow new projects and mature existing research at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. The role contributes to research on designing, controlling, and scaling qubit systems, working collaboratively with experimental and theoretical physicists. The scientist will propose and lead independent research projects focused on novel quantum devices, controls, or characterization techniques; work with APL staff to identify emerging challenges that could benefit from quantum solutions; and support ongoing quantum information science programs through contributions to characterization, control, and error-protection strategies in qubit systems. Occasional travel to sponsor sites, conferences, and workshops is expected. The role requires eligibility to obtain an Interim Secret clearance by the start date and ultimately a TS/SCI+poly clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 1 year of postdoctoral or equivalent experimental experience with quantum systems.
  • Proven record of research accomplishments and publications in quantum science.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to sponsor sites, conferences, and workshops.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret security clearance by the start date and ultimately obtain a TS/SCI+poly clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.

Nice To Haves

  • Significant hands-on experimental experience with qubit design, RF control, quantum measurements, and/or dilution refrigerator operation.
  • Experience with test equipment control and data analysis in Python.
  • Significant experience modeling multi-level, multi-qubit, and/or light-matter interactions.
  • Record of significant contributions to projects pursuing highly sophisticated objectives.
  • Experience collaborating closely with theorists.
  • Active TS/SCI+poly security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Propose and lead independent research projects focused on novel quantum devices, controls, or characterization techniques.
  • Collaborate with APL staff to identify emerging challenges that may have quantum solutions.
  • Support quantum information science programs by contributing to implementation of quantum characterization, control, and error-protection strategies in qubit systems.

Benefits

  • Robust education assistance program.
  • Retirement contributions.
  • Work/life balance.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, short-term disability, and long-term disability insurance.
