The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions in Experimental Quantum Materials and Experimental Quantum Devices. The department seeks experimental researchers who will establish vibrant, externally funded research programs and contribute to teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervision of PhD students. For Experimental Quantum Materials, areas of interest include synthesis, interface control, and characterization of quantum materials, such as bulk crystals, superconducting thin films and heterostructures for quantum technologies, low- and two-dimensional materials, topological and correlated-electron systems, magnetic, spintronic, and twistronic materials, and materials for quantum computing or sensing. Research using or developing advanced characterization methods—including spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging, ultrafast and nonlinear techniques, and local probes—to study structural, electronic, magnetic, and dynamical properties is also welcomed. For Experimental Quantum Devices, the department seeks candidates with research expertise in experimental solid-state device physics, including superconducting, semiconducting, and magnetic devices, and hybrids of these device-based materials, with potential applications in quantum computing and sensing. Candidates’ research should complement and enhance quantum science and technology activities in the Colleges of Science and Engineering. These positions are part of LSU’s broader Quantum Materials, Devices and Sensing hiring initiative in Quantum Information Science and Engineering. Successful candidates will develop experimental programs that complement LSU’s strengths in superconductivity, quantum materials theory, surface science, and ultrafast and quantum optical physics. They are encouraged to collaborate across Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, the Center for Computation and Technology, and U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. Available resources include thin-film growth synthesis, synchrotron-based characterization at the Louisiana Light Source, high-performance computing, access to partner-institution fabrication and national user facilities, and generous startup packages. Candidates may pursue center-scale and multi-investigator funding opportunities and contribute to graduate training in Quantum Science and Technology. The department has research groups and resources spanning quantum materials and information, AMO physics, astrophysics, neutrino physics, high-energy and nuclear physics, gravitational physics, and medical physics. LSU is a partner in the DOE Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center based at Fermilab and collaborates with Oak Ridge and Argonne National Laboratories.
