Senior Principal iOS Architect

Insulet Corporation•San Diego, CA
•$226,400 - $339,650•Hybrid

About The Position

This is a senior, hands-on individual-contributor architecture role responsible for defining the technical vision, architecture, and engineering strategy for Insulet's iOS mobile application in an FDA-regulated insulin delivery system. The app serves as a patient-facing controller in a connected system: it establishes secure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication with an insulin pump, issues therapy commands, receives pump and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data, and securely synchronizes information with the cloud. The architect sets long-term technical direction, establishes standards for iOS engineering, mentors senior engineers, and remains close to implementation to guide critical design decisions. The role partners with firmware, cloud, quality, cybersecurity, human factors, and regulatory teams to support a safe, reliable, scalable, secure, and maintainable medical-device platform. The work includes addressing connectivity, battery life, performance, latency, data integrity, upgrade compatibility, and patient-safety risks. This is a hybrid role, with 1–2 days per week in the office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial recent experience architecting and shipping production iOS mobile apps.
  • Deep experience with Swift and Apple platform APIs, including application lifecycle, background execution, networking, and local storage.
  • Demonstrated iOS Bluetooth Low Energy experience using Core Bluetooth, including connection management, pairing, and reliable command and notification handling.
  • Experience defining architecture for a connected system in which a mobile app controls or gateways a physical device and communicates with a cloud backend.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and its application to collection, storage, and transmission of protected health information from a mobile medical app.
  • Experience working within a regulated quality system, such as medical device, aerospace, or another design-control environment, including requirements traceability and verification.
  • Ability to write and defend architecture decisions that balance safety, security, reliability, and delivery speed.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and quality, regulatory, and clinical partners.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with insulin delivery, CGM, or other Class II or Class III connected medical devices.
  • Working knowledge of IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 62366, FDA design controls, and FDA premarket cybersecurity guidance.
  • Security architecture experience for mobile medical software, including secure storage, certificate pinning, authenticated cloud APIs, and BLE security modes.
  • Experience with Android mobile apps to keep iOS and Android controllers aligned across capabilities.
  • Cross-platform experience with Flutter or Kotlin Multiplatform for shared non-UI logic, while keeping the therapy user interface native iOS.
  • Experience with offline-first synchronization, conflict handling, and auditability of device data uploaded to the cloud.
  • Production-scale experience with SwiftUI and UIKit, modularization, and dependency boundaries that isolate safety-critical paths.
  • Experience contributing technical content to regulatory submissions or design history files.
  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • Experience mentoring senior and principal-level engineers and setting engineering standards across teams as an individual contributor.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the iOS architecture for pump control, CGM and pump data capture, local persistence, and cloud upload, including behavior during connection loss, background execution, and app lifecycle events.
  • Own the mobile app's BLE strategy, including connection models, pairing and bonding, reconnection, reliable command and data handling, and compatibility with pump firmware constraints.
  • Set the iOS platform's technical vision and translate it into roadmaps, architecture decision records, interface contracts, and implementation standards.
  • Design for a regulated medical device, including requirements traceability, risk controls, verification and validation, and a software lifecycle that supports FDA design controls.
  • Establish security and privacy architecture for therapy commands and protected health information in transit and at rest, aligned with HIPAA, FDA cybersecurity expectations, and healthcare privacy obligations.
  • Define data integrity rules for glucose, insulin delivery, and device-state data from capture on the phone through cloud upload and reconciliation.
  • Review designs and critical code paths, and mentor senior engineers to ensure architectural intent is maintained in implementation.
  • Partner with firmware, cloud, quality, human factors, and regulatory teams on interface contracts, hazard mitigations, and submission-ready technical evidence.
  • Evaluate cross-platform options such as Flutter or Kotlin Multiplatform for shared non-UI logic while keeping the therapy user interface native iOS.
  • Identify technical risks early and drive mitigations for connectivity, battery, latency, data loss, and upgrade compatibility.
