Senior Premium Auditor
About The Position
The Senior Premium Auditor analyzes, reviews, and conducts field insurance premium audits to determine actual exposures and premiums for policy coverages. The role reviews policyholder records and applies applicable rules and company standards to ensure accurate and efficient audits while providing excellent customer service. The position handles organizational accounts, including larger and more complex accounts, and may mentor or train less experienced field auditors, but has no direct reports. The work combines working from home with visits to insureds’ clerical offices and other customer worksites. It requires frequent use of a computer, telephone, and standard office equipment, as well as travel by car and plane to conduct audits. Overnight travel may be required, up to 25%.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university with a major or emphasis in Accounting, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 3–5 years of related experience as a Field Premium Auditor.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of commercial lines policies, including Workers’ Compensation and General Liability, and other applicable commercial lines coverages.
- Knowledge of payroll and accounting systems and differences among Workers’ Compensation jurisdictions.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to customer, regulatory agency, and business community inquiries or complaints.
- Ability to present information effectively to top management and public groups.
- Solid math skills, including working with whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to work independently with excellent time-management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to drive and work independently.
- Ability to lift and carry 25–40 pounds.
Nice To Haves
- Carrier experience.
- Associate in Premium Auditing (APA), Certified Insurance Premium Auditor (CIPA), or Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) certification.
- Experience working with WCRIB, NCCI, and other independent bureaus.
Responsibilities
- Perform field audits for organizational accounts and resolve applicable disputes.
- Conduct timely and accurate premium and service audits by examining financial records related to the stated premium base.
- Manage audits for larger and more complex accounts and assist in resolving complex disputes.
- Provide excellent customer service throughout the audit process, including responding to disputes.
- Provide technical assistance and resolve technical issues for internal and external customers, including reviewers, underwriters, and agents.
- Communicate with customers, agents, and external constituencies throughout the audit.
- Communicate audit findings to insureds, agents, and company personnel and help ensure they understand changes in premium exposures.
- Consult with NCCI, WCIRB, and other independent bureaus about classification and technical issues.
- Present audit inventory status to management regularly.
- Keep current on premium auditing information using internal and external resources.
- Partner with customers to conduct professional and expeditious audits.
- Examine policyholders’ payroll records and business operations.
- Record and summarize payroll and classifications used to determine premium.
- Analyze insureds’ business operations to determine appropriate classifications and exposures.
- Mentor or train less experienced field auditors as needed.
