Senior Postgres Engineer

About The Position

Astreya is seeking a Senior Postgres Engineer to own and tune its self-managed, on-premises PostgreSQL deployment. The role focuses on improving the existing deployment through configuration, query, index, and operational tuning, and recommending established PostgreSQL extensions rather than building custom solutions. The work is remote, with the infrastructure hosted on-premises. The engineer will lead performance assessment and reliability improvements across hardware, storage, operating-system tuning, replication, backups, recovery, and upgrades. They will design and operate high availability and failover, automate provisioning and maintenance, and maintain operational documentation and security controls. The role also provides technical guidance, design review, and mentorship to engineers who operate the system day to day.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of hands-on experience operating and tuning PostgreSQL in production at scale.
  • Experience running self-managed PostgreSQL on premises, not only managed cloud services.
  • Working knowledge of the PostgreSQL extension ecosystem, such as pg_stat_statements, pg_partman, and pg_repack.
  • Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including MVCC, WAL, autovacuum, the query planner, locking, and replication slots.
  • Proven query and index tuning experience using EXPLAIN ANALYZE, pg_stat_statements, partitioning, and bloat management.
  • Production experience with high availability, streaming and logical replication, and automated failover.
  • Experience with connection pooling and load balancing.
  • Experience with backup and recovery, including point-in-time recovery and disaster-recovery testing.
  • Scripting and automation skills for provisioning, configuration, and routine operations.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and a record of leading root-cause analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • PostgreSQL committer or contributor status.
  • Experience building PostgreSQL extensions in C or Rust.
  • Experience operating multi-terabyte PostgreSQL deployments.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and tune the deployment’s configuration, query and index performance, and operational practices.
  • Address on-premises concerns including hardware, storage, operating-system tuning, replication, backup and recovery, and upgrades.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and recommend prioritized, practical fixes.
  • Recommend existing PostgreSQL extensions or plugins, and advise on their maturity, maintenance risk, and suitability.
  • Design, operate, and improve high availability, streaming and logical replication, and failover.
  • Own backups, point-in-time recovery, and regular disaster-recovery testing.
  • Plan and execute major-version upgrades and patching with minimal downtime.
  • Automate provisioning, configuration, and routine maintenance.
  • Maintain runbooks, documentation, and database security and access controls.
  • Answer technical questions, review designs, and mentor and guide engineers who own the system day to day.
  • Lead root-cause analysis.
