About the position
The Senior Political Media Strategist at Vera Action will be responsible for developing and executing media and communications strategies to support Vera Action's mission of ending mass incarceration, fighting for immigrants' rights, and building safe communities. They will oversee the development and implementation of communications strategies for multiple projects, work closely with internal and external partners, and ensure that media efforts align with Vera Action's goals. The Senior Political Media Strategist will also play a key role in promoting Vera Action's work, building relationships with the media, and collaborating with various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a communications strategy to drive narrative and policy change
- Survey the media landscape for opportunities and challenges
- Develop messaging to support advocacy priorities and campaigns
- Develop and execute a crisis communications response plan
- Identify and implement strategic ways to promote Vera Action's work
- Draft or edit content for national conversation around public safety
- Craft statements and talking points, provide media trainings
- Create media opportunities for Vera Action leadership or partners
- Introduce Vera Action staff and leadership to reporters, editors, and producers
- Collaborate with various teams to ensure coherent messaging development and delivery
- Travel up to 20% of the time
- Provide after-hours support as needed
- Strong media pitching experience
- Experience providing media training
- Strong writing and research skills
- Strong inter-relational skills and experience working effectively in a large organization with multiple stakeholders
- Flexibility, adaptability, and productivity in a changing political climate
- Experience working with policy coalitions, electoral campaigns, and community-based partners
- Ability to consider multiple perspectives
Requirements
- 6-9 years of work experience in communications, including at least 5 years of experience in political campaigns, nonprofit advocacy spaces, and/or government
- Preferred: Work experience that includes 2-3 years of direct supervisory experience of rising communications talent
- Strong background in media relations or communications strategy
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time
- Strong managerial skills
- Ability to provide after-hours support, as needed
- Strong media pitching experience
- Experience providing media training
- Strong writing and research skills
- Strong inter-relational skills and experience working effectively in a large organization with multiple stakeholders
