About the position
This role is for a life insurance underwriter with 3+ years of experience, who will be joining a growing team at an insurtech startup. The main responsibilities of the role include understanding underwriting policies and guidelines, evaluating risks based on medical history and financial background, and effectively communicating underwriting decisions. The candidate should also be able to drive process improvements while maintaining mortality expectations and work efficiently to gather necessary information for decision making.
Responsibilities
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as a life insurance underwriter
- Familiarity with underwriting policies, guidelines, practices, and procedures
- Ability to evaluate an individual's medical history, physical condition, occupational hazard, and financial background to determine risk acceptance
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to independently make underwriting decisions and work with minimal direction
- Comfortable with ambiguity
- 4-year degree preferred
- Demonstrated knowledge of risk selection in medical, non-medical, and financial aspects
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Positive, inclusive, agile, and collaborative mindset
- Familiarity with term and permanent life insurance underwriting
- In process or completed industry designations such as LOMA, ALMI, FMLI, ALU, FALU
Benefits
- US national base salary range: $64,000-$104,000
- Additional factors considered for individual pay: work location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training
