About The Position

The Senior Plumber performs skilled plumbing work at the master or journeyman level, including the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of water, gas, steam, sewer, compressed air, vacuum, and medical gas systems across campus facilities. Responsibilities include interpreting blueprints, inspecting and testing systems, supporting construction and retrofit projects, managing work orders through CMMS, communicating with customers, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. This essential position supports ongoing campus operations and emergency response efforts. Position Summary: Provides skilled plumbing work at a master or journeyman level in the installation, maintenance and repair of domestic water, steam, natural gas, sewer, compressed air, vacuum, medical gases and other utilities systems in general building, mechanical, office, and laboratory environments. Position Key Accountabilities: Installs and repairs plumbing for all UTHSC buildings following standard safety codes and procedures. Performs the service, installation, maintenance, and repair of water, air, gas, sewer and steam systems. Uses the latest techniques to cut, fit, and connect copper, plastic, rubber, vinyl, neoprene, aluminum, and stainless steel tubing; cut, thread, and fit black, galvanized, and brass pipe; cut and fit galvanized and black pipe using grooved (Victaulic) coupling connectors; cut, fit, and solder copper and brass pipe; cut, fit, and join glass pipe; cut, fit, and connect various plastic pipe; cut, fit, and connect cast iron pipe; use the latest compression techniques and tools (ProPress) for joining copper and bronze pipe. Installs, troubleshoots, and repairs various potable and non-potable hot and cold water circulating and heat exchanger systems; localized and centralized domestic water cooling systems; sewer and storm water drain systems; and compressed air, vacuum, and medical air systems. Studies and interprets existing equipment and project related blueprints, drawings, and specifications. Attend meetings, and assist supervisors and the project management team with the review of plumbing drawings for retrofit and new construction projects. Perform the inspection and testing of equipment and systems following industry standards and manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines. Troubleshoot equipment and systems and develop plans, specifications, estimate costs, submit purchase requests, and purchase materials for needed repairs, alterations, retrofits, and construction projects. Required to communicate with customers and complete assigned work orders using the computerized maintenance manager system (CMMS) through personal computer (PC) and smartphone applications. Required to carry a university communication device as assigned and respond to calls during normal business hours. This job classification is designated as essential at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. In case of an emergency, essential positions are those required to sustain clinical services and/or are responsible for the protection of university assets. Personnel in designated as essential positions are expected to report to their designated work site during their appointed work schedules, even when the institution has been officially declared to be on restricted access or closed due to adverse conditions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Basic PC skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of modern, state-of-the-art plumbing repairs, installation practices and water & pressure testing.
  • Journeyman Plumber by Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) required
  • Master Plumber by Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship required
  • 3 years of experience as a journeyman plumber
  • 2 years of experience as a master plumber required
  • Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

  • Medical Gas Piping Installation (MedGas) Endorsement by Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) preferred

  • Services sewer and storm water drain systems.
  • Maintains compressed air, vacuum, and medical air systems.
  • Studies and interprets blueprints, drawings, and specifications for equipment and projects.
  • Attends meetings and assists with the review of plumbing drawings for retrofit and new construction projects.
  • Performs inspection and testing of equipment and systems according to industry standards and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Troubleshoots equipment and systems, develops plans, specifications, estimates costs, submits purchase requests, and purchases materials for repairs, alterations, retrofits, and construction projects.
  • Communicates with customers and completes assigned work orders using the computerized maintenance manager system (CMMS) via PC and smartphone applications.
  • Carries a university communication device and responds to calls during normal business hours.
  • Responds to emergencies as an essential personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
