About The Position

The Senior Piping Engineer provides technical direction to a team of engineers and designers when serving as lead engineer. The lead engineer is responsible for delivering mechanical services and deliverables on time, within performance budget, and to quality expectations. The role may include advanced engineering work as Engineer of Record (EOR) for complex assignments. Work is performed under minimal supervision in the Beaumont area office. The role develops and checks piping engineering designs, calculations, specifications, estimates, layouts, material take-offs, and construction documentation. It coordinates mechanical design with other disciplines, supports drafting and construction, reviews vendor and construction submittals, and provides field support. The Senior Piping Engineer also advises on scope and design changes, guides less experienced personnel, and leads work execution within scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Professional Engineering registration.
  • 15 or more years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Knowledge of design standards and codes.
  • Knowledge and application of piping materials, including development of piping material and material procurement specifications.
  • Knowledge of good design practices for sizing piping systems, including compressible-fluid piping systems.
  • Experience with flexibility and stress analysis of piping systems.
  • Ability to specify criteria for and select piping specialty items.
  • Ability to design complex process and utility piping systems.
  • Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use, and application.
  • Knowledge of piping supports and restraints and their application.
  • Ability to identify, apply, and specify safety valves and devices to maintain piping-system mechanical integrity.
  • Ability to identify, apply, and specify steam traps and liquid drainers.
  • Ability to estimate piping-related construction quantities from conceptual documents and determine construction material quantities.
  • Knowledge of other disciplines' deliverables to coordinate design efforts.
  • Understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for producing mechanical deliverables.
  • Ability to estimate task completion accurately.
  • Ability to develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules, and man-hour budgets for a small project or an area of a larger project.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
  • Ability to lead a team to deliver on commitments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical direction to engineers and designers when functioning as lead engineer, ensuring mechanical deliverables and services meet schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
  • Perform advanced engineering work and serve as Engineer of Record for complex assignments when required.
  • Apply department design and engineering standards and become familiar with project scope, specifications, and design criteria.
  • Perform stress analysis, prepare construction and material procurement specifications, calculations, and piping estimates.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to determine efficient approaches to engineering tasks.
  • Produce preliminary estimate-level designs and material take-offs appropriate to the project estimate.
  • Prepare detailed design calculations and sketches for construction materials, organized for review and use by drafting and design personnel.
  • Assist the drafting group with routine layout and detailing issues by providing sketches and details needed to complete engineering drawings.
  • Coordinate with design leaders from other disciplines to support scheduled project completion.
  • Review and check vendor drawings and other discipline drawings for mechanical input.
  • Develop designs that use construction materials efficiently, are easy to construct, and meet client expectations.
  • Check other engineers' calculations for accuracy and compliance with codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
  • Advise the senior engineer of identified design or scope changes and communicate changes promptly.
  • Help assemble scopes, drawings, and specifications into packages for mechanical procurement inquiries and subcontract pricing.
  • Develop construction specifications and review fabrication drawings and construction submittals for conformance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Perform fieldwork to gather data, check tie-ins, and provide construction support.
  • Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis to complex designs and demonstrate knowledge of methods, practices, and techniques for process and manufacturing projects.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel.
  • Coordinate work activities with staff members and discipline leads.
  • Identify and develop work-sharing packages for interoffice support, and lead communication and execution within scope, schedule, and budget.
