Senior OT Engineer

Valar Atomics•Orangeville, UT

About The Position

Valar Atomics is seeking a Senior OT Engineer to deliver defined implementation or testing objectives from planning through execution, troubleshooting, and verified delivery. The role is part of the Engineering organization, working with Instrumentation & Controls, whose systems monitor, automate, and protect company facilities and reactor technologies. The OT Engineering scope includes power and rack infrastructure, compute, networks, identity, physical and cyber security, operational data, and industrial software platforms such as FactoryTalk. FactoryTalk work focuses on backend deployment, configuration, integration, and recovery; PLC programming and controls-code development are outside the role. The successful candidate will own assigned system outcomes, work independently within established standards, make sound decisions, and resolve interface issues with other engineers. The position suits either a deep specialist or a capable generalist with hands-on experience. Travel is approximately 15% to the Torrance facility and approximately 15% to the Orangeville, Utah facility. Valar Atomics describes itself as a young startup developing scalable clean, high-temperature nuclear power. Its first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah is intended to demonstrate advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication. The company emphasizes autonomy, ownership, urgency, and practical delivery.

Requirements

  • Independently deliver an implementation or rigorous hands-on test work package from a defined objective to verified completion.
  • Plan methods, interfaces, dependencies, resources, testing, and turnover within established standards.
  • Diagnose causes using measurements or recorded evidence and verify that corrective actions resolve the problem.
  • Maintain controlled configurations and usable records, coordinate interfaces, and escalate decisions beyond authority.
  • Demonstrate at least one of the listed specialty areas; expertise across every specialty is not required.
  • Be highly organized, with disciplined task tracking, accurate documentation, clear priorities, and reliable follow-through.
  • Progress independently from a defined objective to a working, verified result, with timely escalation of design or scope decisions.
  • Bring strong depth in one or more disciplines and enough interface awareness to work effectively with other specialists.
  • Troubleshoot persistently using evidence and verify results rather than stopping at an apparent fix.
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder).

Nice To Haves

  • Specialty in power distribution and backup, including determining loads and ratings; configuring and troubleshooting PDU, ATS, and UPS systems; and verifying transfer, backup power, and recovery.
  • Specialty in racks and cabling, including planning rack and cable installations, selecting compatible components, diagnosing physical faults, and verifying completed work.
  • Specialty in compute, storage, and virtualization, including deployment and operation and verification of restoration and availability after failures.
  • Specialty in industrial software backends, including deploying, integrating, troubleshooting, and recovering FactoryTalk or equivalent industrial backends and supporting services.
  • Specialty in networking, including configuring and troubleshooting switching, routing, segmentation, and firewalls and verifying connectivity, redundancy, and restoration.
  • Specialty in technical documentation supported by exceptional hands-on testing, including independently developing methods, preparing setups, executing tests, diagnosing failures, and verifying corrective results.
  • Specialty in Windows domain administration, including administering Active Directory and Group Policy, troubleshooting DNS and time dependencies, and verifying changes and recovery.
  • Specialty in access control, including implementing and troubleshooting roles, privileged access, and service-account permissions, reviewing access, and verifying least privilege.
  • Specialty in central logging and authentication, including integrating services and verifying collection, access, retention, and recovery.
  • Specialty in log and packet analysis, including correlating evidence across systems, establishing causes, and verifying corrective actions.
  • Specialty in operational data systems, including deploying and operating historians, databases, or interfaces and verifying retention, buffering, access, and recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Turn defined objectives into practical implementation or test plans covering prerequisites, equipment or configuration needs, dependencies, tests, and recovery steps.
  • Independently implement and operate systems, or prepare, execute, and diagnose system tests within the assigned scope.
  • Diagnose difficult faults using measurements, logs, test results, and system behavior, and verify that corrective action resolves the problem.
  • Plan and execute commissioning, failure, and recovery tests with clear acceptance criteria.
  • Resolve integration issues with other engineers and identify when requirements or designs need revision.
  • Complete delivery with accurate configurations, executable procedures, test evidence, and usable handoff records.
  • Travel to the Torrance facility approximately 15% of the time.
  • Travel to the Orangeville, Utah facility approximately 15% of the time.
  • Coordinate interfaces and escalate decisions beyond the role's authority.
  • Maintain controlled configurations and usable records.
