About The Position

The Senior Network Engineer plans, designs, implements, operates, and supports secure, enterprise-scale network infrastructures. The role maintains high-performance, multi-platform, multi-system networks, proactively diagnoses performance issues, and implements improvements to ensure availability, reliability, and security in mission-critical environments. It provides technical leadership in complex network operations and requires expertise in both traditional enterprise networking and Linux-based networking and systems, including the ability to design and integrate complete solutions under tight timelines and with minimal oversight. The engineer works across Cisco enterprise networking and Linux networking and systems, integrating Linux hosts, network equipment, and security components into architectures that meet operational and security requirements. The role also contributes to system integration, testing, and validation; develops technical documentation; leads or guides small technical teams; and may support cellular or other networked communications technologies. Occasional travel may be required. The position requires an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph and access to ITAR- and/or EAR-controlled information. Applicants must meet applicable U.S.-person or export-license requirements; some positions may require current U.S. citizenship. The role is with AeroVironment, an autonomous systems company focused on defense technologies.

Requirements

  • At least 15 years of network engineering experience, including routing, switching, and network security in enterprise or mission-critical environments.
  • Significant hands-on experience with Cisco networking and security technologies, including routing, switching, firewalls, VPNs, and IDS/IPS.
  • Practical experience with Linux networking and Linux systems in an operational or production environment, beyond basic Linux system administration.
  • Experience with KVM, Ansible, Bash, Python, VPN, and firewall configuration.
  • Ability to design and document networked systems and architectures.
  • Ability to lead technical efforts and resolve complex network and infrastructure issues.
  • Ability to work independently in small teams with limited ramp-up time or mentoring resources.
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph.
  • Must meet applicable ITAR/EAR U.S.-person or export-license requirements; some positions require current U.S. citizenship.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior CNO/TAO or similar offensive or defensive cyber operations experience.
  • Experience with Cisco ACI design or operations.
  • Experience with cellular and other non-traditional communications technologies.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical, high-availability environments with strict security requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed for operations, testing, or deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, configure, operate, and support enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and security appliances.
  • Install, configure, and maintain Cisco routing and switching platforms, such as Cisco 7600, 6500, and 3750 series or equivalent.
  • Translate network security requirements and policies into detailed device configurations.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve network performance, connectivity, and security issues.
  • Manage and support Cisco ASA firewalls, VPN technologies, IDS/IPS, and network management tools.
  • Design and implement enterprise-level or ISP-grade backbone networks for mission-critical operations.
  • Work with Cisco ACI concepts and operations, including fabric concepts and integration with existing architectures.
  • Work with physical connectivity, including fiber and Ethernet standards, optics, cabling, and patching.
  • Design, configure, and troubleshoot Linux-based networking in production environments, including routing, bridging, VLANs, iptables/nftables, routing daemons, VPNs, and firewalls.
  • Configure and maintain Linux systems used as network infrastructure components, such as virtual routers, VPN concentrators, security gateways, and monitoring platforms.
  • Use KVM, Ansible, Bash, Python, and related automation or orchestration frameworks to deploy and manage networked Linux systems.
  • Integrate traditional Cisco-style networking with Linux system administration, with a focus on Linux networking.
  • Design end-to-end systems integrating Linux hosts, network equipment, and security components to meet operational and security requirements.
  • Develop technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, network and system design documents, and implementation plans.
  • Translate mission and operational requirements into practical network and system architectures.
  • Contribute to integration, testing, and validation of complex networked solutions.
  • Lead and guide small technical teams in resolving complex network and infrastructure problems.
  • Provide technical direction for operating, configuring, optimizing, and maintaining network devices and Linux-based systems.
  • Ensure network and system environments meet security, compliance, and operational requirements.
  • Support cellular and networked communications technologies as required by the mission.
  • Adapt to new systems and technologies under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Support occasional travel as required.
