About The Position

The Mortgage Loan Underwriter Senior promotes member financial well-being through underwriting home equity line of credits and conventional loans. This position evaluates and approves/denies home equity line of credits and residential mortgage loans within scope of authority and in accordance with company policy and secondary market guidelines. The Mortgage Underwriter Senior provides subject matter expertise to the Mortgage Underwriting team and identifies and communicates improvements to the department’s operating methods and procedures.

Requirements

  • Five years to eight years of similar or related experience.
  • A two-year college degree, or completion of a specialized certification or licensing, or completion of specialized training courses conducted by vendors, or job-specific skills acquired through an apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

  • Review, examine and underwrite home equity line of credit and mortgage loans by evaluating risk such as debt ratio, loan-to-value ratio, credit score, property valuation review and various other factors to ascertain loan viability, identify risk issues and potential fraud and setting terms for approval and modification, or identifies reason for rejection.
  • Ensure soundness, business value and conformity with Credit Union quality procedures and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure HMDA information is correct in all systems.
  • Analyze in detail the credit report and obligations including loan payments, mortgage obligations, credit history and credit scores, child support / alimony, etc. Ensure all liabilities are accounted for.
  • Analyze and review employment and income. Complete income worksheets as applicable including the review of tax returns for self-employed borrowers.
  • Conduct a detailed review of all appraisals to verify collateral is acceptable.
  • Review Fraud Reports and compliance review reports as applicable.
  • Assist in resolving post-closing issues.
  • Complete the loan withdraw process to include review of the HMDA screen for accuracy.
  • Determine and document loan conditions and communicate requirements and/or decision.
  • Identify and recommend alternative loan requirements, funding and/or loan structuring solutions.
  • Maintains contacts with outside agencies to obtain required information and/or documentation.
  • Perform second level review on loans recommended for denial.
  • Evaluate the application to determine if there ae any other products or alternative terms available before issuance of denial.
  • Supports the Mortgage Underwriting team by accepting unresolved complex inquires and works directly with employees to research and explore potential solutions to provide alternatives within company policy.
  • Follows established escalation processes.
  • Assists department training for current or new employees by sharing knowledge and expertise of internal procedures, how compliance or other regulations affect processes, and helping employees be confident in job functions relating to Mortgage Processing and Mortgage products and services.
  • Identifies and makes recommendations to improve the department's operating methods, training and procedures.
  • Collaborates with other departments on member service delivery and process development projects.
  • Maintains knowledge of all Credit Union products, services, and promotions and to market all internal and external sources to sustain loan production.
  • Contributes to efficient Credit Union operations by performing other job related duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • The Credit Unions business days are Monday through Saturday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; however, this position may occasionally require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and to include evening/weekend hours.
