Mortgage Underwriter

Pylon•Phoenix, AZ

About The Position

Pylon is seeking an entrepreneurial Mortgage Underwriter to join its Platform team. The role underwrites residential mortgage loans end to end and provides expert human judgment for Pylon’s automated Decisioning engine, supporting efficient and compliant loan origination. The underwriter works directly with customers on complex files and provides hands-on feedback to product and engineering teams to help automate more underwriting over time. Requirements

  • Expert-level knowledge of the entire mortgage lending process and detailed underwriting knowledge specific to loan requirements.
  • Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, and regulatory guidelines related to residential mortgage lending.
  • Ability to operate in a highly regulated industry with a compliance-first approach, and to review and update processes as needed.
  • Customer-focused approach and commitment to high standards.
  • Ability to prioritize scalable software solutions over operational workarounds, surface issues, lead discussions on long-term solutions, document them, and manage temporary manual workarounds when needed.
  • Ability to oversee third-party fulfillment partners and build relationships to drive consistent, timely results.
  • Strong, principled opinions and willingness to articulate and defend decisions.
  • Initiative in identifying opportunities to improve the product and team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on mortgage products within a fintech environment is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite residential mortgage files across Conventional, Jumbo, Non-QM, and Government products, reviewing credit, income, assets, and collateral against guidelines.
  • Issue clear, accurate conditions and clear them promptly to reduce reconditioning and unnecessary submission turns.
  • Conduct second-level reviews, handle exceptions, and manage escalations to ensure quality control.
  • Regularly assess and enhance underwriting systems to support smooth file flow, quality, regulatory compliance, and efficiency.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, aiding decision-making and driving product improvement.
  • Work closely with internal teams, partners, and engineering to drive product improvements and optimize fulfillment infrastructure.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of mortgage origination and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Work directly with customers on complex files and provide feedback to product and engineering teams.
  • Oversee third-party fulfillment partners, ensuring high-quality, on-time originations.
