About The Position
The Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL) serves as Vericel's scientific and clinical expert for the Orthopedic franchise, providing non-promotional scientific exchange, medical education, and research support to healthcare professionals, investigators, and key opinion leaders (KOLs). The Senior MSL develops and maintains strategic relationships with nationally and regionally recognized orthopedic experts while serving as a trusted scientific partner to the medical community. Through high-quality scientific engagement, this role generates meaningful medical insights, supports evidence generation, and contributes to the development and execution of Vericel's Medical Affairs strategy. Working cross-functionally with Clinical Development, Medical Affairs, Commercial, Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, and Research & Development, the Senior MSL helps translate scientific knowledge and field insights into actions that advance patient care, strengthen the Vericel Orthopedic portfolio, and support long-term business objectives.
Requirements
- Advanced scientific or clinical degree (MS, MSN, DPT, PA, NP, PharmD, PhD, or MD).
- Minimum 5 years of Medical Science Liaison or equivalent Medical Affairs experience within biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical device, regenerative medicine, or related therapeutic areas.
- Demonstrated expertise in orthopedics, cartilage restoration, sports medicine, regenerative medicine, musculoskeletal therapeutics, cell therapy, or related specialties.
- Strong scientific and clinical knowledge with the ability to communicate complex data effectively to healthcare professionals.
- Excellent presentation, relationship-building, communication, and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with key opinion leaders and academic institutions.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating across cross-functional teams.
- Must reside within reasonable proximity to a major airport.
Nice To Haves
- Experience supporting regenerative medicine or cell therapy products.
- Experience participating in advisory boards, investigator meetings, or publication planning.
- Previous mentoring or leadership experience within a field medical organization.
- Experience supporting clinical research and evidence-generation initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the scientific and clinical expert for Vericel's Orthopedic portfolio within the assigned geography.
- Develop, maintain, and strengthen strategic relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), investigators, academic institutions, and other healthcare professionals.
- Deliver balanced, evidence-based scientific exchange and education in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and company policies.
- Represent Vericel at scientific congresses, advisory boards, investigator meetings, and other medical forums.
- Serve as a trusted scientific resource for physicians, healthcare professionals, payers, and healthcare systems.
- Provide non-promotional scientific support for Vericel's commercialized and investigational orthopedic products.
- Educate healthcare professionals through scientific presentations, customer visits, investigator meetings, advisory boards, and educational programs.
- Support annual Medical Affairs planning by providing scientific insights and recommendations that inform evidence generation, lifecycle management, publication strategy, and future medical initiatives.
- Maintain expertise in orthopedic surgery, cartilage restoration, regenerative medicine, cell therapies, competitive products, and emerging scientific developments.
- Collaborate with Clinical Development and Research teams to support investigators participating in clinical trials and post-market studies.
- Provide guidance regarding Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISS) through established internal processes.
- Ensure activities are conducted in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Identify opportunities that strengthen clinical evidence supporting Vericel's Orthopedic franchise.
- Identify and communicate meaningful scientific, clinical, competitive, and healthcare system insights gathered from the field.
- Translate external insights into actionable recommendations that support Medical Affairs strategy, clinical development, publications, and commercial planning.
- Partner closely with Commercial, Marketing, Medical Communications, Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, and Research & Development while maintaining the scientific independence of Medical Affairs.
- Contribute scientific expertise to cross-functional initiatives supporting Vericel's long-term business objectives.
- Share best practices that strengthen field medical execution and scientific engagement.
- Participate in internal scientific education, journal clubs, training programs, and Medical Affairs initiatives.
- Continuously evaluate opportunities to improve field medical effectiveness, scientific exchange, and customer engagement.
- Respond appropriately to unsolicited medical information requests using approved scientific resources.
- Ensure all scientific interactions comply with FDA regulations, PhRMA Code, company policies, and Medical Affairs standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation of field medical activities and customer interactions within approved systems.
- Complete all required compliance, scientific, and operational training.
