Senior Mechatronics Engineer

Johnson & Johnson•Santa Clara, CA
•$129,000 - $208,150•Onsite

About The Position

Johnson & Johnson’s Robotics and Digital Solutions group is seeking a Senior Mechatronics Engineer for the Ottava R&D team in Santa Clara, California. The team is developing a next-generation soft-tissue robotic platform for targeted, minimally invasive, personalized care. The engineer will work across mechanical, electrical, mechatronics, controls, software, and clinical disciplines to design capital hardware, including custom actuators, structural components, and sensors. The role leads the design and development of complex mechanical and electromechanical components for a regulated medical device. The engineer owns hardware from early concept through verification and production, provides technical leadership, makes engineering tradeoffs, and collaborates with systems, electrical, software, quality, manufacturing, and regulatory partners. This is a hands-on role with significant lab and prototype interaction in an office- and lab-based product development environment, with occasional manufacturing support. The anticipated base pay range is $129,000 to $208,150. The role is eligible for an annual performance bonus and long-term incentive program. Company-sponsored benefits may include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, business accident and group legal insurance, pension and 401(k) plans, vacation, sick time, holiday pay, and work, personal, and family time.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least 7 years of industry experience in mechanical product development.
  • Proven experience designing complex mechanical or electromechanical systems.
  • Strong proficiency with 3D CAD such as SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent.
  • Experience taking designs from concept through verification and into production.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a hands-on engineering approach.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated industry such as medical devices, aerospace, or automotive.
  • Familiarity with FDA design controls, ISO 13485, or similar quality systems.
  • Experience with motorized mechanisms, sensors, or mechatronic assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype builds, testing, and debugging.
  • Experience supporting early manufacturing and design transfer.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design from concept generation through detailed design and production release.
  • Design precision mechanical assemblies, including structural components, mechanisms, and electromechanical interfaces.
  • Develop motorized and sensor-integrated mechanisms in collaboration with electrical and software engineers.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, select materials, and apply design for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).
  • Own subsystem-level design verification and validation activities.
  • Plan and execute prototype builds, testing, failure analysis, and design iterations.
  • Author and review design documentation in compliance with medical device quality system requirements.
  • Participate in technical design reviews, risk assessments, and root cause investigations.
  • Support manufacturing transfer, supplier engagement, and resolution of production issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to improving engineering rigor.
