Senior Mechatronics Engineer

Corning•Charlotte, NC
•$83,134 - $114,310

About The Position

Corning is seeking a hands-on Mechatronics Engineer to design, develop, integrate, and deploy advanced automation systems for manufacturing applications. The position spans mechanical design, robotics, sensing, controls, software, and system integration, turning complex manufacturing challenges into reliable, scalable automation solutions. The engineer will lead technical work from concept development and simulation through commissioning and performance optimization. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, integrators, and manufacturing personnel, the role aims to improve process capability, quality, throughput, and reliability. Project work will primarily take place in Hickory, the Metro Charlotte area, and other Corning locations in North Carolina. The role requires approximately 50% travel, primarily to local project sites, with occasional planned overnight and international trips for vendor engagement, FATs, SATs, and commissioning. Immigration sponsorship is not supported.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering, or a related degree focused on automation, including robotic and control systems.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and implementing mechatronic systems combining mechanical, electrical/hardware, controls, and software elements.
  • Experience with robotic systems, including robot kinematics, dynamics, motion planning, and/or control algorithms.
  • Ability to design and optimize mechanical components and assemblies using CAD tools.
  • Experience with machine-vision systems and image-processing techniques.
  • Programming experience in one or more of C, C++, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and systems-thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Detail-oriented approach to engineering quality, safety, documentation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary, project-based teams.
  • Ability to travel approximately 50%, primarily to local project sites, with occasional planned overnight and international trips to support vendor engagement, FATs, SATs, and commissioning.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience integrating sensors, instrumentation, and data-acquisition systems.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink or LabVIEW.
  • Experience with industrial automation technologies, including PLC programming, HMIs, SCADA, motion control, and industrial communications.
  • Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers, or real-time control software.
  • Experience supporting automation equipment through commissioning, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, or production deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems that improve manufacturing automation, precision, reliability, and productivity.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to define automation requirements, develop project plans, and translate operational needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Integrate mechanical systems, actuators, sensors, motion-control hardware, machine vision, control systems, and industrial robots into robust automation equipment.
  • Develop and apply system models, simulations, and engineering analyses to validate designs and optimize system performance.
  • Develop control, optimization, and automation software for robotic and mechatronic systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex system-level issues using structured data analysis and sound engineering principles.
  • Support system commissioning, acceptance testing, deployment, and continuous improvement in manufacturing environments.
  • Create technical documentation, design records, progress updates, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide technical support and training to manufacturing teams on the operation, maintenance, and safe use of automation systems.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in robotics, automation, controls, sensing, and precision engineering, and bring new ideas into project work.
