About The Position

We're seeking a hands-on technician experienced in both Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) systems and cryogenics who will focus on the operation and maintenance of large-scale helium liquefaction systems and cryomodules within the accelerator complex. This position resides in the Superconducting Linac Systems Group in the Accelerator Systems Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Requirements

  • An AS degree in mechanical technology or related field with at least 7 years of relevant experience (a high school diploma with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience will also be considered)
  • Experience in operating large-scale process systems
  • Must be willing to learn new skills and train others

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a clean production environment, using mechanical and electronic test and measurement equipment
  • Experience with high-vacuum systems and cleanroom techniques
  • Experience in operating and maintaining rotating equipment

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a senior Central Helium Liquefier Specialist responsible for operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of large-scale cryogenic helium process systems and rotating equipment.
  • Lead recovered helium purification and liquid helium Dewar filling operations based on supply chain availability.
  • Perform and lead complex cryomodule repair, maintenance, refurbishment, testing, and commissioning activities with minimal supervision.
  • Support cryogenic and Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) research and development efforts, including assembly, certification, and operation of SNS linac cryogenic components and systems.
  • Respond independently to alarms, abnormal events, and operational issues, providing technical leadership during recovery and troubleshooting activities.
  • Mentor and train technical staff, develop procedures and documentation, and provide technical input during design reviews and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) activities.
  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot process, test, and measurement equipment; collect and analyze system performance data to verify operational integrity and acceptance criteria.
  • Provide work direction and technical guidance to trades, crafts, contractors, and junior personnel supporting fabrication, assembly, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) and quality requirements while supporting continuous improvement initiatives for system reliability and operational performance.
  • Primarily work day shift with occasional alternate and some weekend shifts.
