Senior Mechanical Engineer P3

RTX•Tucson, AZ
•$86,800 - $165,200•Onsite

About The Position

The Hardware Engineering, Land Based Effectors Department is hiring Senior Mechanical Engineers at its Tucson, Arizona site. The positions support the full program life cycle—including early development, production support, and legacy sustainment—for Land Based Effectors products and subsystems serving U.S. government and international customers. The roles are onsite and may require domestic and international travel to suppliers, Raytheon facilities, and customer sites. Mechanical Engineering work includes design, development, validation, qualification, procurement, and production support across the design life cycle. Development activities may include understanding requirements, concept development, DFMA and PFMA, margin analysis, technical data package development, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, engineering tests, technical analysis reports, and design reviews. The engineer provides technical ownership for complex mechanical subsystem design, manufacture, integration, and production sustainment work. The role may serve as responsible engineer for major hardware subsystems, lead small teams, and mentor junior engineers while collaborating with engineering disciplines, suppliers, factories, and other functions. An active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance is required prior to the start date; U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
  • At least 6 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Six years of work experience in mechanical design and design documentation.
  • Mechanical aptitude to provide solutions to technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Active DoD-issued security clearance; an active and transferable U.S. government-issued clearance is required before the start date, and the candidate must be able to obtain an interim clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for the required security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Leadership experience with small teams of 4–6 people.
  • Supplier interaction and supplier management experience.
  • Ability to work independently or in teams, with flexibility and initiative.
  • Experience in mechanical subsystem packaging, materials, thermal or structural analysis, energetics principles, control systems, interconnect, airframes, or large assembly development.
  • Strong verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) experience per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience with CREO (Pro/E) or similar 3D solid modeling software.
  • Experience with PTC Windchill Product Data Management or equivalent configuration/data management software.
  • Ability to travel to government and supplier facilities in support of program activities.

Responsibilities

  • Own and execute technical tasks and serve as a prime technical contact for complex mechanical subsystem design, manufacture, integration, and production sustainment problems.
  • Communicate with cross-disciplinary engineering team members and suppliers to analyze, model, and document technical data packages and their capabilities and compliance with requirements.
  • Work autonomously with limited supervision as the responsible engineer for major hardware subsystems.
  • Lead small teams when needed and collaborate with supply chain, operations, quality, systems, analysis, and electrical functions.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the mechanical discipline.
  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, subassemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
  • Collaborate with Raytheon factories and suppliers on new product integration and manufacturing process improvements.
  • Perform and review tolerance analyses to ensure form, fit, and function meet design intent for the use application.
  • Improve new and existing designs using Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) and Design for Producibility principles.
  • Apply technical problem-solving and hardware development experience in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Support production of mechanical subsystems at internal factories and suppliers.
  • Support first hardware builds and first article inspections.
  • Review manufacturing process instructions and support material review board dispositions.
  • Perform root cause investigations into production-related hardware issues.
