About The Position

Clopay Corporation is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for New Product Development at its Mason, Ohio location. The role offers substantial autonomy and end-to-end ownership of major product development projects, from initial ideation and sketching through prototyping, testing, validation, manufacturing integration, and market release. The engineer will lead cross-functional teams, make critical design decisions, and develop products informed by customer needs and market opportunities. The position involves hands-on prototyping and testing, including working with technicians to build and iterate physical assemblies and creating custom test setups and validation protocols. The engineer will design detailed part and assembly models using Autodesk Inventor, develop engineering standards and calculations, deploy products through the engineering change order process, and write installation manuals. Designs must be practical for scalable manufacturing and comply with applicable structural and life safety codes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5 to 10 years of professional experience in product design or product development.
  • Practical hands-on experience through hobbies or personal projects such as classic car restoration, engine rebuilding, woodworking, custom machining, welding, or complex home workshop projects.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools to fabricate, modify, troubleshoot, and refine mechanical components.
  • Ability to collaborate with technicians to develop and test prototype equipment, design practical tests, and validate mechanical concepts through hands-on testing.
  • Fluency in 3D CAD modeling and parametric design; Autodesk Inventor is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of how fabrication methods affect design viability.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively and lead cross-functional groups.
  • Ability to clearly explain complex 3D mechanical assemblies to technical and non-technical colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Own major product lines and lead projects through the Phase Gate process from initial concept to final market release.
  • Collaborate with and lead multidisciplinary teams, serving as the engineering authority and keeping projects aligned with technical goals.
  • Develop firsthand understanding of customer challenges and market opportunities, and work with Strategic Marketing to translate insights into functional designs.
  • Present and explain concepts to stakeholders, including shop floor associates and executive leadership.
  • Work with technicians to rapidly prototype, build, and iterate physical assemblies.
  • Design custom test setups and validation protocols, lead hands-on testing, and ensure compliance with structural and life safety codes such as ASCE, IBC, and UL.
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to optimize prototype designs for scalable, production-ready fabrication.
  • Use Autodesk Inventor to create detailed part and assembly models and maintain high-quality parametric design standards.
  • Develop engineering standards and calculations for infinitely variable designs and implement them in the ERP system.
  • Manage new product deployment through the engineering change order (ECO) process.
  • Write practical installation manuals for field installers.

Benefits

  • The stability of a large organization and the collaborative feel of a specialized craft team.
  • Opportunities to grow a lifelong career.
