Senior Mechanical Engineer

BorgWarner•Wilsonville, OR

About The Position

Join BorgWarner Portland, under the Cascadia Motion brand, as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer II. The role drives clean-sheet mechanical design programs from concept through production, owning the full mechanical design from top-level system architecture to detailed component and complex tooled-part design. The engineer creates and manages large, detailed CAD models, building robust geometry efficiently to support rapid iteration and design maturity. BorgWarner Portland is a small, agile team that designs and manufactures hardware for electric vehicle propulsion and industrial power systems, including electric motors, power electronics such as inverters, and transmissions. The team uses lean processes tailored to customer needs and works in a fast-moving environment with design cycles typically around a year. Its customers include established OEMs, emerging technology companies, and startups.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Strong engineering foundation and ability to solve problems quickly with limited information while meeting project timelines.
  • At least 8 years of on-the-job experience with 3D CAD.
  • At least 8 years of on-the-job experience with 2D drafting.
  • General understanding of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • General understanding of the design and release of sheet metal, machined, injection-molded, and cast-metal parts.

Nice To Haves

  • Expert-level SolidWorks skills, 10+ years of experience, and ability to rapidly create complex parts.
  • Ability to develop blank-sheet GD&T schemes for complex parts per ASME Y14.5.
  • 10+ years of experience in the design and release of sheet metal, machined, injection-molded, and cast-metal parts.
  • Experience in mechanical design related to power electronics, specifically motor drives and electric motors.
  • Experience in mechanical design of gearing, including design and specification of gears and splines.
  • Ability to construct assembly-level FEA simulations to analyze stress and strain in assembly components; Ansys Structural and SolidWorks Simulation are preferred.
  • Ability to construct assembly-level CFD simulations to analyze pressure drop, thermal characteristics, and electronics cooling; Ansys Fluent and SolidWorks Flow Simulation are preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical design and release of new products from project kick-off through production launch.
  • Organize and plan work to meet project milestones, act swiftly when needed, and communicate clear recovery strategies when challenges arise.
  • Perform blank-sheet mechanical design of electric vehicle propulsion systems, including electric motors, power electronics (inverters), and transmissions.
  • Create expert-level 3D CAD models using SolidWorks.
  • Create 2D drafting sheets in SolidWorks and apply GD&T to communicate design intent.
  • Conduct peer-level and executive-level design reviews.
  • Create and control bills of materials during the design phase to support successful project launch.
