  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to plan, prioritize, and organize work.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead interdisciplinary technical teams.
  • Initiative and creativity in troubleshooting mechanical issues and determining approaches for non-routine situations.
  • Demonstrated experience with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM Pro.
  • Experience creating drawings to ASME standards, including applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience analyzing mechanical systems, including thermal, structural, and hydrodynamic analysis, using hand calculations and commercial FEA/CFD software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, and COMSOL.
  • Background designing, building, and testing prototype and limited-production hardware systems.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in enclosed spaces.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with UUVs, operating and control systems and associated electronics and sensors, launch and recovery subsystems, and system-to-host interfaces, including acoustic ranging and communications.
  • Experience with manual machine tools such as mills and lathes, and fabrication equipment such as saws, grinders, and welders.
  • Experience with additive manufacturing processes such as 3D printing.
  • Familiarity working as part of an Integrated Product Team (IPT) on Department of Defense programs of record.
  • Knowledge of subsea acoustic systems, including projectors and hydrophones.
  • Experience designing for tight-tolerance optical systems.
  • Knowledge of corrosion processes and designing systems for long-term operation in corrosive environments.
  • Fiber optic telemetry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and analysis of UUV mechanical systems, including propulsion, dynamic control, structure, electronics, mission payloads, and launch and recovery systems.
  • Mentor and provide leadership to junior mechanical engineers.
  • Create 3D models of mechanical systems in SolidWorks, from conceptual designs through detailed critical designs.
  • Create mechanical drawings in accordance with ASME Y14.100 and maintain models and drawings using SolidWorks PDM Pro.
  • Perform structural, vibration, shock, thermal, and hydrodynamic analysis using hand calculations and engineering analysis software.
  • Present mechanical designs and justify engineering decisions during internal and customer engineering reviews.
