Senior Mechanical Engineer

Berkshire Grey•Bedford, MA

About The Position

The Senior Mechanical Engineer develops a system-level understanding of the Stride product and how its mechanical system interacts with controls, electrical hardware, manufacturing, installation, and service. The role owns complex mechanical projects or major product areas from problem definition through design, analysis, prototyping, validation, documentation, release, and production support. The engineer leads reliability and performance investigations, uses structured root-cause analysis and testing to identify underlying problems, and develops durable solutions. The role evaluates proposed changes for their effects on reliability, safety, cost, manufacturability, installation, serviceability, and compatibility with existing systems. It also supports adapting the Stride platform for new customers, applications, environments, and market segments while managing product complexity. The position provides technical direction for mechanical projects or subsystem work, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, maintains engineering documentation, reviews other engineers’ work, and mentors less-experienced engineers. It is suited to someone who enjoys improving a fielded product, connecting detailed design work to system-level effects, and following changes through validation, documentation, and production support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience.
  • Considerable experience designing, developing, and supporting complex mechanical or electromechanical products.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, including mechanisms, structural design, materials, tolerancing, manufacturing processes, and component selection.
  • Ability to independently investigate ambiguous technical problems and bring them to a documented, production-ready resolution.
  • Experience improving an existing product’s reliability through root-cause analysis, testing, and design changes.
  • Ability to understand system-level behavior and recognize how changes in one area may affect the rest of the product.
  • Sound engineering judgment and ability to make practical tradeoffs among technical performance, risk, cost, schedule, and product complexity.
  • Experience taking designs through release and change-control processes, including drawings, bills of material, design reviews, validation, and engineering changes.
  • Willingness to own both technical work and the detailed documentation needed to implement it successfully.
  • Ability to work autonomously while building alignment within a multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial automation, material-handling equipment, robotics, conveyors, or other complex machinery.
  • Experience supporting products deployed in customer or production environments.
  • Familiarity with reliability engineering methods, failure analysis, risk assessment, and design verification.
  • Experience designing for manufacturing, assembly, installation, maintenance, and field service.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, PDM or PLM systems, and formal engineering change-control processes.
  • Experience mentoring engineers or improving team processes, tools, or technical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a strong system-level understanding of the Stride product and interactions among its mechanical system, controls, electrical hardware, manufacturing, installation, and service.
  • Own complex mechanical projects or major product areas from problem definition through design, analysis, prototyping, validation, documentation, release, and production support.
  • Lead investigations into reliability and performance issues using structured root-cause analysis, testing, field data, and engineering judgment.
  • Identify recurring problems and develop solutions that address underlying causes.
  • Evaluate proposed changes for their effects on reliability, safety, cost, manufacturability, installation, serviceability, and compatibility with existing systems.
  • Support adaptation of the Stride platform for new customers, applications, environments, and market segments while managing product complexity.
  • Provide technical direction for mechanical projects or subsystem-level work involving other engineers and cross-functional partners.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, including requirements, calculations, drawings, bills of material, test plans, test reports, design reviews, and engineering change orders.
  • Work with manufacturing, sourcing, quality, controls, electrical engineering, installation, service, and product management.
  • Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, decisions, and recommendations to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Review other engineers’ work and strengthen team technical practices, product knowledge, and documentation quality.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and contribute to a collaborative and accountable engineering culture.
