About The Position

Auris Health, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Hardware Simulation, in Santa Clara, California. The role develops, builds, and executes finite element analysis models using ANSYS to evaluate the structural performance, stiffness, stress, deformation, and durability of robotic medical device assemblies and electromechanical systems. The engineer derives and simulates designs based on user needs and product requirements, and conducts structural, dynamic, vibration, modal, and thermal analyses to inform design decisions from concept through development, verification, and production. The position analyzes and optimizes precision mechanical components and motion-transmission subsystems, correlates simulation results with physical test data, and improves model accuracy for design validation. It works cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, test, and vendor teams to support robotic medical device platform development, troubleshooting, root-cause investigations, design improvements, risk reduction, and technical issue resolution. The engineer also prepares simulation reports, engineering documentation, design specifications, and engineering change order materials in an ISO/FDA-regulated medical-device environment. The position may be performed on a hybrid basis under company policy. The employer will accept a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field and two years of experience in the job offered or in a related Senior Mechanical Engineer, Hardware Simulation occupation. The stated annual rate of pay is $165,000–$185,000. The posting is anticipated to close on November 30, 2026.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in the job offered or in a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Hardware Simulation-related occupation.
  • Experience building complex simulation models with ANSYS and Abaqus to propose solutions for electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with vibration analysis, including modal analysis, modal testing, and dynamically induced vibration analysis.
  • Experience with static, dynamic, linear, and nonlinear analyses on assemblies ranging from 3 to 60 parts.
  • Experience simulating motors, gears, lead screws, splines, cams, linear guides, belts, bearings, and pulleys.
  • Experience crafting static, quasi-static, and explicit dynamic models.
  • Experience in mechanical analysis, including statics, dynamics, kinematics, thermal management, and stress analysis.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials, including machining, sheet metal, casting, injection molding, and 3D printing.
  • Experience making drawings following ASME Y14.5-2009 standard methodologies.
  • Experience with dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Experience working with vendors to select, source, quote, and procure off-the-shelf and custom-designed components.
  • Experience with finite element analysis and thermal simulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, build, and execute ANSYS finite element analysis models to assess structural performance, stiffness, stress, deformation, and durability of robotic medical device assemblies and electromechanical systems.
  • Derive and simulate designs based on user needs and product requirements.
  • Perform static, quasi-static, dynamic, linear, nonlinear, modal, and vibration analyses on robotic mechanisms, lightweight structures, actuator systems, and motion-transmission assemblies.
  • Analyze and optimize mechanical components and subsystems, including motors, gears, lead screws, splines, cams, bearings, pulleys, belts, and linear guides.
  • Conduct thermal and heat-transfer analyses to assess thermal management and support design decisions through concept, development, verification, and production.
  • Correlate structural, vibration, and thermal simulation results with physical test data, investigate discrepancies, and improve model accuracy for design validation.
  • Collaborate with mechanical design, electrical engineering, controls, systems integration, test engineering, manufacturing, quality, and external vendors.
  • Support design troubleshooting, root-cause investigations, simulation-driven design improvements, risk reduction, and resolution of technical issues during rapid product development.
  • Prepare simulation reports, engineering documentation, design specifications, and engineering change order materials.
  • Support safe, robust, and reliable designs in an ISO/FDA-regulated medical-device development environment.
