Senior Mechanical Engineer

PerkinElmer•Woburn, MA
•Onsite

About The Position

Covaris, a PerkinElmer Company, develops sample preparation solutions for multiomics research and clinical applications, using proprietary Adaptive Focused Acoustics technology. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will advance core technologies for laboratory instruments and consumables through new product development and sustaining engineering, from concept and design through manufacturing. The work involves complex instruments with electromechanical, fluidic, thermal, optical, and acoustic subsystems; tightly toleranced plastic consumables; and hardware accessories that support laboratory automation. The engineer will contribute individually and on cross-functional teams to conceive, design, analyze, test, document, and release products for manufacturing. The position is predominantly on-site in Woburn, Massachusetts, with occasional remote work possible with supervisor approval. Up to 10% travel to vendors and trade shows is required. The role requires working in a laboratory setting and lifting objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and at least 5 years of product development experience, or a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Experience with sketch-based CAD modeling and PLM or database file management systems.
  • Familiarity with mechanical drawing best practices using ASME and ANSI standards.
  • Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis for assemblies and interfaces.
  • Experience with mid- to high-complexity electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with quality control processes and familiarity with ISO 9001.
  • Experience with precision machined parts, molded parts, ceramic components, or similar components.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with 3D printing and standard commercially available printers and techniques.
  • Advanced SolidWorks modeling experience and familiarity with its PDM file management system.
  • Competency with FEA, CFD, and other analysis modules available under SolidWorks.
  • Experience with dFMEA, pFMEA, DOE, and DFM.
  • Exposure to biology, biotechnology, or biopharma.
  • Experience with motorized multi-axis motion systems and robotics for SBS plate manipulation and laboratory automation.
  • Experience developing regulated products, preferably FDA Class II or IVD instruments, and familiarity with ISO 13485.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to apply structured problem-solving tools to complex problems.
  • Practical knowledge of the mechanical behavior of engineering materials, including fabrication processes and plating techniques.
  • Scripting or programming skills with Python or an equivalent language.

Responsibilities

  • Conceive and design ultrasound-based instrumentation and hardware accessories for laboratory automation, both independently and on cross-functional teams.
  • Use SolidWorks to design mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Use calculations, simulations such as FEA and CFD, and experimentation to assess whether designs meet functional, cost, ergonomic, and material-compatibility requirements.
  • Create and execute design of experiments (DOEs) and test plans for design evaluation and verification.
  • Conduct cross-functional design reviews and document designs, including component and assembly drawings, product specifications, test plans, verification reports, and supporting process and change-order documentation.
  • Manage external vendors to ensure components meet design specifications and are delivered with high quality and reproducibility.
  • Execute engineering change orders in the electronic quality management system.
  • Develop rapid prototypes using 3D printing, in-house machining, and external prototyping services, and iterate to optimize designs.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for audiences ranging from engineers to executive management.
  • Participate in FMEA, risk assessments, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure designs align with applicable ANSI, ASME, and SBS standards.
