Senior Mechanical Designer

Re:Build Manufacturing•Rochester, NY
•$40 - $53•Onsite

About The Position

Re:Build Optimation is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to develop custom-engineered equipment and automated systems. The designer will take skid-based, modular, and containerized systems from concept through detailed 2D and 3D design and release for fabrication, primarily using SolidWorks and AutoCAD. The role involves developing practical, buildable solutions that balance function, manufacturability, safety, cost, and schedule. The Senior Mechanical Designer works directly with clients to clarify input and document project requirements, owns technical design work, and collaborates with engineers and fabrication teams. The position leads challenging design projects, contributes to design standards, and provides guidance to less experienced designers while remaining hands-on. The position is based onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, New York, with occasional travel to customer and supplier locations, typically less than 25%. The hourly rate is $40.00–$53.00. The role may also be eligible for annual incentive compensation and/or long-term incentives, subject to Company plans. The company offers medical, dental, vision, retirement, paid time off, and other benefits. Employees share ownership in the company and share in its financial rewards.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of mechanical design or equipment design experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or engineering-services environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D and 2D modeling software, including SolidWorks and working knowledge of AutoCAD, or similar tools.
  • Experience designing equipment, frames, weldments, or assemblies that were fabricated and built from the candidate’s drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, dimensioning, tolerances, fabrication methods, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to independently manage complex design assignments from concept through detailed design and release.
  • Experience reviewing technical drawings, solving design challenges, and collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to provide technical guidance to other designers.
  • An associate degree, bachelor's degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work onsite in Rochester and/or Rush, New York, and travel up to 25%.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing custom machinery, industrial automation equipment, skid-mounted systems, or modular process equipment.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D or other plant design software.
  • Knowledge of piping layouts, pressure vessels, or industrial process systems.
  • Familiarity with engineering analysis and simulation tools such as SolidWorks FEA, ANSYS, or Caesar II.
  • Experience developing technical estimates, supporting proposals, or participating in customer design reviews.
  • Experience mentoring junior designers or leading technical design activities.
  • Familiarity with 3D point clouds, ISO 9001, Lean manufacturing, or continuous improvement practices.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and equipment design requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop 3D models and 2D drawings, including layouts, assemblies, weldments, and components, using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Produce general arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, fabrication and assembly drawings, and bills of material using GD&T, weld symbols, and drafting standards.
  • Solve mechanical design challenges while considering performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, and manufacturing teams to develop integrated equipment and system designs.
  • Lead technical design reviews, evaluate design solutions, and provide guidance to project teams and customers.
  • Work with fabrication and assembly teams to resolve technical challenges and support equipment builds and installations.
  • Support project planning, technical proposals, and engineering estimates.
  • Mentor junior designers and drafters, provide technical guidance, and review design work.
