Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Structures

Mach Industries•Huntington Beach, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

Mach Industries is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, analysis, testing, and verification of mechanical and electromechanical systems for next-generation defense platforms. The role owns structural engineering efforts from requirements derivation and conceptual design through production, including analysis, fabrication, testing, and validation. Designs are optimized for manufacturing, assembly, mass, cost, and cross-disciplinary requirements. The engineer works with multidisciplinary teams to drive technical decisions, resolve integration challenges, and ensure structural designs are supported by test and analysis. The role owns assembly- and product-level data packages, including engineering drawings, GD&T, and analysis and test outputs, and contributes throughout the hardware development cycle. It is a hands-on role involving real hardware and rapid design iteration. The position also helps establish structural engineering practices, mentors other engineers, and accelerates hardware development across the program. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain the necessary authorizations.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of mechanical engineering experience focused on designing and prototyping mechanical systems.
  • Strong 3D modeling skills using CAD tools such as NX or SolidWorks, including drafting and GD&T expertise per ASME Y14.5.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ownership of hands-on, end-to-end hardware development efforts for flight or production hardware.
  • Experience integrating mechanical systems with sensors, actuators, and embedded control hardware.
  • Availability to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations, due to export-control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience designing with lightweight materials, composites, or additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience with configuration management and change management best practices for aerospace systems.
  • Experience sizing structures using first-order hand calculations, FEA (Nastran), or multiphysics software packages.
  • Experience supporting coupon-, subscale-, or assembly-level testing for development and qualification campaigns.
  • Experience designing for cross-disciplinary impacts, including aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, or thermal management.
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, C++, or other programming languages for analytical modeling, simulation, and engineering problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design and development of system-level hardware, from early CAD concepts and functional prototypes through mass production.
  • Lead hands-on testing, including vehicle-level qualification and design validation as well as subscale and coupon-based testing, and use results to iterate designs.
  • Drive manufacturability, part selection, and tolerance stack-up decisions, including GD&T, for scalable production.
  • Apply structural, thermal, and materials fundamentals and first-order sizing to develop robust, lightweight designs.
  • Design fixtures and tooling for manufacturing, assembling, inspecting, qualifying, and testing aerospace assemblies.
  • Author test plans, technical documentation, and engineering milestones for cross-team and leadership review.
  • Perform analytical modeling and FEA simulation to evaluate mechanical system performance, guide design decisions, and inform trade studies.
  • Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Help establish structural engineering practices and mentor other engineers.

Benefits

  • Performance-based incentives tied to individual and company performance.
  • Stock options or equity participation.
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision plans.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Paid time off.
  • Funds for continuing education, training, and career growth.
  • Professional development opportunities.
