Mechanical Design Engineer, Structures

Mach Industries•Huntington Beach, CA
•$105,000 - $140,000

About The Position

Mach Industries is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design, prototype, and iterate on mechanical and electromechanical systems supporting next-generation defense platforms. The role involves designing, analyzing, and testing parts and systems while optimizing for manufacturing, assembly, mass, cost, and cross-disciplinary requirements. The engineer will collaborate with experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to develop structural components and assemblies that meet demanding requirements for strength, stiffness, manufacturability, and performance. Work spans the hardware development cycle, including CAD modeling, first-order calculations, prototype construction, and evaluation of test results. This is a hands-on engineering role focused on solving challenging mechanical problems and rapidly iterating on real hardware.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of mechanical engineering experience focused on designing and prototyping mechanical systems; experience may be professional, hobby, or academic.
  • Strong 3D modeling skills using CAD tools such as NX or SolidWorks, including GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience owning hands-on, end-to-end hardware development efforts, such as FSAE, DBF, a Rocket Team, or similar projects.
  • Available to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with lightweight materials, composites, or additive manufacturing techniques.
  • Experience sizing structures using first-order hand calculations, FEA (Nastran), or multiphysics software packages.
  • Experience supporting coupon-, subscale-, or assembly-level testing for development and qualification campaigns.
  • Experience designing for cross-disciplinary impacts, including aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, or thermal management.
  • Experience integrating mechanical systems with sensors, actuators, and embedded control hardware.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or C++ for analytical modeling, simulation, and engineering problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Own mechanical design and development of subsystem-level hardware, from early CAD concepts through functional prototypes and production.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and documentation for fabrication, assembly, inspection, and testing.
  • Support hands-on testing, including vehicle-level qualification and design validation, as well as subscale and coupon-based testing, and use results to iterate designs.
  • Drive manufacturability, part selection, and tolerance stack-up decisions, including GD&T.
  • Apply mechanical fundamentals in structures, thermal analysis, and materials, along with first-order sizing, to develop robust, lightweight designs.
  • Design fixtures and tooling for manufacturing, assembling, inspecting, qualifying, and testing aerospace assemblies.
  • Author test plans, technical documentation, and engineering milestones.
  • Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends as needed.

Benefits

  • Performance-based incentives tied to individual and company performance.
  • Stock options or equity participation.
  • Healthcare, dental, and vision plans.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Paid time off.
  • Funds for continuing education, training, and career growth.
