Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Avionics Integration

Mach Industries•Huntington Beach, CA
•$140,000 - $180,000

About The Position

Mach Industries is seeking a mechanical engineer with avionics integration expertise to design, integrate, and test electromechanical systems for next-generation defense platforms. The role focuses on avionics mounting architectures, electronics enclosures, PCBA mounting, wire harness accommodation, connector interfaces, EMI/EMC accommodation, and thermal management for reliable, flight-ready hardware. The engineer will take avionics systems from concept through hardware bring-up, environmental testing, and flight qualification. Working with electrical, firmware, systems, manufacturing, and test teams, the role develops rugged, serviceable, and manufacturable hardware for demanding aerospace environments. The position may require access to information controlled under U.S. export laws and is subject to applicable ITAR and export authorization requirements.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of mechanical engineering experience focused on avionics integration, electronics packaging, or wire harness design.
  • Strong experience using 3D CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent for mechanical design and detailed drawings, including GD&T expertise per ASME Y14.5.
  • Practical experience with enclosure design, wire harness routing and integration, and EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience owning end-to-end hardware development and integration efforts, such as student aerospace or rocketry teams, UAV projects, or automotive electronics integration.
  • Availability to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. export-control eligibility or authorization requirements for access to protected information.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental acceptance or qualification testing of avionics, including vibration, shock, thermal, and ingress-protection testing.
  • Working knowledge of thermal management and electronics layout best practices.
  • Experience evaluating PCBA structural response, including first-order analytical methods, finite element analysis (FEA), vibration response, and Steinberg-type fatigue assessment.
  • Experience designing and releasing wire harnesses, including routing, connector selection, strain relief, bend-radius compliance, abrasion protection, shielding termination, grounding schemes, and maintainability.
  • Experience collaborating closely with electrical engineering teams on layout, connector selection, grounding, and shielding.
  • Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards and requirements for avionics integration.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop avionics or PCBA mounting architectures and enclosures using CAD, including engineering release and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Work with electrical engineering teams to develop and verify system architecture, schematics, and layout through ECAD/MCAD data exchange and ICD documentation.
  • Design avionics accommodation, including shock and vibration isolation, serviceability, connector access, EMI/EMC mitigation, grounding, shielding, thermal management, and reliability.
  • Develop and execute environmental qualification testing for integrated avionics assemblies, including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, ingress protection, and EMI/EMC testing.
  • Design fixtures and tooling to manufacture, inspect, qualify, and test avionics hardware.
  • Author test plans, technical documentation, and engineering milestones for cross-functional teams and leadership review.
  • Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends as needed.
