Mechanical Design Engineer, Avionics Integration

Mach Industries•Huntington Beach, CA
•$105,000 - $140,000

About The Position

Mach Industries is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with avionics integration expertise to design, integrate, and test electromechanical systems for next-generation defense platforms. The role focuses on avionics mounting architectures, electronics enclosures, PCBA mounting, wire harness accommodation, connector interfaces, EMI/EMC accommodation, and thermal management for reliable, flight-ready hardware. The engineer will take avionics systems from concept through hardware bring-up, environmental testing, and flight qualification. Working with electrical, firmware, systems, manufacturing, and test teams, this hands-on position develops rugged, serviceable, and manufacturable hardware for demanding aerospace environments.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of mechanical engineering experience focused on avionics integration, electronics packaging, or wire harness design; professional, academic, or hobby/project experience is considered.
  • Strong experience with 3D CAD tools such as NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent, including mechanical design and detailed drawings with GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Practical experience with enclosure design, wire harness routing/integration, and EMI/EMC mitigation techniques.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience owning end-to-end hardware development and integration efforts, such as student aerospace or rocketry teams, UAV projects, or automotive electronics integration.
  • Available to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
  • Must meet the stated U.S. export-control eligibility requirements or be eligible to obtain required authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with environmental acceptance or qualification testing of avionics, including vibration, shock, thermal, or ingress protection testing.
  • Working knowledge of thermal management and electronics layout best practices.
  • Experience collaborating closely with electrical engineering teams on layout, connector selection, grounding, and shielding.
  • Knowledge of aerospace or defense standards and requirements for avionics integration.
  • Experience with first-order, FEA, or Steinberg analysis for PCBA sizing, survivability, and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop avionics or PCBA mounting architectures and enclosures using CAD, and prepare engineering releases and detailed drawings with GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Work cross-functionally with electrical engineering teams to develop and verify system architecture, schematics, and layouts through ECAD/MCAD data exchange and ICD documentation.
  • Design avionics accommodation for shock and vibration isolation, serviceability, connector access, EMI/EMC mitigation, grounding, shielding, thermal management, and reliability.
  • Support the definition and execution of integrated avionics assembly testing, including vibration, shock, thermal cycling, ingress protection, and EMI/EMC testing.
  • Design fixtures and tooling to manufacture, inspect, qualify, and test avionics hardware.
  • Author test plans, technical documentation, and engineering milestones for cross-team and leadership review.
  • Support critical development and test milestones, including occasional extended hours and weekends as needed.

Benefits

  • Healthcare, dental, and vision plans.
  • Retirement savings plans.
  • Paid time off.
  • Performance-based incentives tied to individual and company performance.
  • Stock options or equity participation.
  • Funds for continuing education, training, and career growth.
