Karman is developing the revolutionary Heat Processing Unit (HPU) to reinvent thermal handling for giga-scale data centers & AI factories. The HPU is built around a supercritical CO2 chiller system utilizing a high-speed electrically driven turbomachinery core. Our system aims to reduce energy consumption in data center thermal management by greater than 25% and increase energy density by 10x. We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Manufacturing engineer to lead the manufacturing and assembly of cutting-edge turbomachinery that will be utilized to build Thermal01. This role is critical to establishing robust manufacturing capabilities, including equipment layout, process development, vendor selection, tooling selection, and workflow designs. We are a team that values first-principles thinking, hands-on problem solving, and close cross-functional collaboration to deliver cohesive, high-performance systems.

Requirements

  • 5+ years relevant work experience and B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing engineering or related technical field
  • Extensive experience authoring work instructions, mBOMs, and technical procedures for interdisciplinary assemblies involving mechanical, electrical, and fluid/pneumatic systems
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with design, manufacturing, production, and quality teams to execute and optimize build processes
  • Strong understanding of integrated assembly processes across mechanical, electrical, and fluid systems
  • Experience executing and driving projects in a fast-paced, evolving environment

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience leading or mentoring engineering teams
  • Experience scaling manufacturing processes from development through rate production
  • Familiarity with ERP/MES systems
  • Hands-on experience with RCCA, assembly testing, and tooling design/fabrication
  • Experience in capacity analysis, PFMEA, value stream mapping, and work center/process development

Responsibilities

  • Own manufacturing readiness for assigned product lines, developing scalable assembly processes, resolving production challenges, and supporting capacity expansion initiatives
  • Own a major integrated subsystem, contributing directly to build development while guiding team execution from design release through production
  • Coordinate cross-functional efforts across design, supply chain, and production to execute the build process: covering planning, sourcing strategy, sequencing, mBOM development, tooling, equipment and work order creation
  • Author work instructions and technical procedures spanning mechanical, electrical, and fluid/pneumatic systems
  • Guide workcenter development with a strategic focus on long-term goals, safety, capital investment, and tooling as the facility scales
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership to resolve manufacturing challenges, lead root cause analysis, and implement sustainable, efficiency-driven solutions
