About The Position

The Senior Manager Mechanical Design Engineering for the GI Robot Platform leads a team of engineers and other technical personnel responsible for developing, documenting, verifying, and launching new mechanical product designs. The role guides the team in identifying and evaluating product opportunities that address customer needs, while ensuring designs deliver value to patients, physicians, and hospitals. It combines technical leadership with functional management, including selecting, developing, and evaluating staff to support effective team operations. The manager provides technical direction and operational leadership throughout product development, from planning and design through verification and transfer. The position works across organizational boundaries and partners with senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to align product development and lifecycle management. This is a fully onsite, day-shift employee position.

Requirements

At least 10 years of experience with mechanical product design.
At least 5 years of direct people-management experience.
At least 5 years of experience taking products from concept to production.
Minimum bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanical designs.
Strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
Strong people-management abilities, including staffing, productivity, and career development.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including finite element analysis, statistics, and experimental design.
Strong project management, planning, and change management skills.
Ability to lead or influence cross-functional teams designing complex surgical products.

Nice To Haves

Master's or PhD degree.
Medical product experience.
Experience across all phases of product development, including design, implementation, debugging, verification, qualification, and transfer.
Experience presenting a team's work to executive management.
Exceptional mechanical aptitude and visual-thinking skills.
SolidWorks experience.
Knowledge of manufacturing techniques, including rapid fabrication of proof-of-concept and functional prototypes.

Responsibilities

Provide technical vision for project teams and foster creativity, risk-taking, and effective execution.
Develop working knowledge of external customer needs and requirements to guide valuable product designs.
Establish group objectives and individual work goals aligned with product development goals.
Assign tasks, set priorities, establish metrics, and track progress.
Assess employee performance and provide coaching to improve it.
Manage, coach, and mentor engineers, technicians, and drafters.
Ensure design engineers follow design history file guidelines in accordance with FDA requirements and conduct design reviews under product development procedures.
Provide engineering resources to Process Development, Manufacturing, Supplier Engineering, Test Engineering, and Quality to facilitate design transfer.
Lead planning, staffing, budgeting, and project or program cost tracking.
Build and maintain cross-functional partnerships with Product Management, Clinical Research, Clinical and Medical Affairs, Process Development, Testing, Supplier, Quality, Regulatory Affairs, and Marketing.
Serve as the primary R&D liaison to senior leadership and cross-functional meetings, presenting technical updates, design rationale, and risk mitigation strategies.
