About The Position

AbbVie is recruiting a Senior Manager, Infrastructure Project for the core start-up leadership team at its new manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina. The campus will bring together advanced manufacturing, laboratory technologies, and AI to support production of immunology, oncology, and neuroscience medicines. The first phase includes manufacturing facilities, laboratories, a warehouse, administrative offices, and employee wellness facilities. The role leads technical workstreams and contributes to program outcomes by developing actionable methods and analyses, collaborating with cross-functional partners to integrate technical solutions throughout the project lifecycle, and advising on complex technical decisions and risks. It defines design and engineering planning for assigned projects and leads system, equipment, and technology installations, supporting safe integration, commissioning readiness, and on-time delivery. The position is accountable for assigned infrastructure packages or buildings across the campus, from utilities and site infrastructure to warehouses, laboratories, offices, and support facilities. It translates campus objectives into package deliverables and manages scope, schedule, budget, quality, procurement, contracts, construction coordination, commissioning readiness, handover, and closeout. It works with Global Engineering, construction, commissioning and start-up, qualification, operations, procurement, EHS, Quality, designers, contractors, and vendors. The role also provides technical guidance to junior engineers and assigned team members, communicates project status and risks, and supports continuous improvement.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
Recommended minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering or capital-project experience, including direct accountability for delivering complex infrastructure projects or major packages.
Demonstrated delivery experience across planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, or comparable regulated manufacturing environments.
Experience with campus utilities, building systems, site infrastructure, or support facilities, including interfaces with cGMP manufacturing operations.
Hands-on experience managing scope, budgets, forecasts, schedules, risk, contractor performance, procurement, contract administration, and change control.
Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams and coordinating designers, contractors, vendors, Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Operations, Procurement, EHS, and Quality in a matrixed organization.
Knowledge of utilities, infrastructure, building systems, and applicable cGMP design principles.
Ability to convert portfolio priorities into practical package plans and drive deliverables to completion within delegated authority.
Ability to use budgets, forecasts, integrated schedules, milestones, and performance measures to identify variances and drive corrective action.
Ability to anticipate constraints, evaluate options and delivery impacts, implement mitigation, and escalate decisions with clear recommendations.
Ability to provide concise project-status and decision updates, maintain reliable project records, and apply lessons learned to improve delivery.

Responsibilities

Manage assigned campus infrastructure projects or packages, translating campus objectives into deliverables and achieving approved scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
Develop and maintain package or building execution plans, budgets, forecasts, schedules, milestones, and performance measures; monitor progress, address variances, and report to the Infrastructure Project Director.
Represent assigned infrastructure scopes during design development led by Global Engineering; consolidate campus and Operations requirements, coordinate design reviews and vendor information, track technical decisions, and integrate constructability, maintainability, local conditions, and project interfaces.
Develop procurement plans, prepare scopes of work and technical requirements, coordinate bid evaluations, assess supplier and contractor capability and delivery risk, recommend suppliers and contractors for approval, and track critical deliveries.
Support contract formation and administer assigned package scope, deliverables, and contractor obligations within delegated authority; maintain change records, evaluate impacts, and obtain approvals before authorizing changes or commitments.
Coordinate package construction execution with the Construction Director and construction managers; resolve design and field interfaces and monitor contractor progress and quality.
Work with EHS, Quality, and Engineering on safety, compliance, inspection, and permitting requirements, escalating unresolved issues as needed.
Coordinate acceptance and turnover requirements with Commissioning and Start-up, Qualification, and Operations teams; ensure completion, testing, applicable qualification or verification, punch-list resolution, documentation, training support, and asset handover.
Close contracts and capture lessons learned to improve delivery across the portfolio.
Assess project processes and resolve operational or technical issues; deliver operational improvements, business value, and site production efficiency through project execution.
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and assigned team members, build accountability, and align cross-functional stakeholders.
Deliver and document technical outputs for complex projects, validate methods, record results and assumptions, adhere to applicable standards and controls, and communicate progress, impacts, risks, and recommended mitigations.
