About The Position

Discord is seeking a Senior Manager to lead global indirect tax strategy and advisory for new products, evolving business models and laws, and enterprise-wide initiatives. The role acts as a strategic advisor to teams across the business, ensuring indirect tax requirements, risks, and opportunities are considered early in decision-making. It translates complex sales and use tax, VAT, GST, digital services tax, and other indirect tax issues into practical guidance and owns the work from strategy through execution. The position leads technical research and end-to-end tax positions, advises on product and market launches, monitors global legislative and regulatory developments, and partners with teams across Product, Legal, Finance, Accounting, Engineering, Tax Operations, and Direct Tax. It also oversees compliance implementation, audits and controversy, tax planning and risk reduction, external advisors, and the use of tax technology and AI tools. The role prepares concise recommendations and risk assessments for senior leadership, including the CFO.

Requirements

At least 10 years of global indirect tax experience, combining Big 4 or law firm experience with in-house experience at a technology or digital company.
Deep technical knowledge of US sales and use tax.
Working knowledge of international VAT/GST, particularly as applied to digital products, SaaS, and platform business models.
Ability to own complex issues from start to finish independently and deliver polished, accurate, well-supported work products.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including explaining complex tax issues in plain language to engineers, product managers, and CFOs.
Sound judgment and comfort operating in gray areas, with the ability to make recommendations and revisit them as facts change.
Experience working with tax engines such as Vertex or similar and translating technical positions into system logic.
Must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma counties.

Responsibilities

Own technical areas of global indirect tax and research complex issues, including taxability, sourcing, and emerging business models.
Develop, document, and defend end-to-end tax positions through legal research and well-reasoned memoranda.
Lead indirect tax strategy for new products, monetization models, and market entries, including digital goods, virtual currency, marketplaces, advertising, and subscriptions.
Partner with Product, Legal, Finance, Accounting, and Engineering from early design through product go-live.
Monitor global legislative and regulatory changes, assess their business impact, and make actionable recommendations.
Analyze indirect tax implications of intercompany transactions, new entity structures, and acquisitions; partner with Direct Tax on approaches balancing tax efficiency, risk, and operational feasibility.
Partner with Tax Operations to ensure positions are documented and implemented correctly in the tax system, and review global indirect tax compliance and returns.
Lead audits and tax controversy, including defense strategy and supporting documentation.
Identify and lead tax planning and risk-reduction opportunities, including registrations, deregistrations, and voluntary disclosures.
Prepare clear, concise materials for senior leadership, including the CFO, outlining issues, options, recommendations, and risks.
Manage external advisors for scope, quality, and cost, and evaluate or challenge their conclusions as appropriate.
Use and help build tax technology and AI tools to improve indirect tax analysis, and develop scalable processes, templates, and controls as the business grows.
