Senior Manager, Finance

Minoan,
$134,750 - $160,325Hybrid

About The Position

We’re looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented, and strategic finance and accounting leader to join our growing team as Senior Manager of Finance. This role is perfect for someone ready to roll up their sleeves on the day-to-day work of financial operations first, then optimize it, systematize it, and eventually delegate or automate it as Minoan scales. You’ll be Minoan’s first dedicated finance leader, taking ownership of everything from sales tax compliance and recovery to vendor and client payment operations, month-end close, and the financial reporting that goes to our CEO and board. This is a rare opportunity to build a finance function from the ground up at a high-growth startup, and to grow into a broader leadership role, including people management, as the function matures. Given the scope, you’ll collaborate constantly with Sales and Growth, Operations, Marketing, and Brand Partnerships; not just behind a spreadsheet. This role reports directly to our VP of Strategy, Operations & Finance and is based in NYC. Remote is an option for the right candidate, with a strong preference for someone who can easily get to NYC when needed.

Requirements

  • 6–8 years of experience in accounting, financial operations, or controllership roles.
  • Time at an outside accounting/professional-services firm before moving in-house is a plus, and startup experience is strongly preferred.
  • A “professional problem solver” mentality: genuinely excited to do the work of a first finance hire. Some of the workflows that sit under this role already exist and simply need an owner, while others do not. This person will need to approach these with both an open mind along with the technical willingness to architect new processes
  • Strong knowledge of QuickBooks Online and finance tools such as Ramp, Brex, and Avalara; experience with Bill.com or similar AP management system is a plus.
  • Experience handling multi-state sales tax compliance (or the aptitude to pick it up fast)
  • Experience working cross-functionally with teams like Marketing, Sales, Procurement, and Operations.
  • SQL proficiency is a meaningful plus. You’ll be working alongside Sigma and Snowflake, and the ability to write or troubleshoot your own queries will set you apart.
  • Comfortable operating independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup environment, with excellent attention to detail and a natural drive to improve (and to revisit) processes as the company scales.
  • Strong spreadsheet skills (Google Sheets / Excel) and confidence handling large datasets.
  • CPA or prior Controller experience is a plus but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field and/or experience.
  • In-person/NYC preferred, but remote is available.

Nice To Haves

  • Time at an outside accounting/professional-services firm before moving in-house is a plus
  • Startup experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience with Bill.com or similar AP management system is a plus
  • SQL proficiency is a meaningful plus
  • CPA or prior Controller experience is a plus but not required

Responsibilities

  • Own month-end close and financial reporting in accordance with GAAP, collaborating closely with internal stakeholders and accounting partners, focusing on accurate sales and COGS reporting for each period.
  • Establish and own an ongoing reconciliation control between our order management system, our Brand Partner invoices, and payments data.
  • Partner with the VP of Strategy, Operations & Finance on daily cash flow management, including timing of sales deposits and credit card payoffs, and balancing working capital against invested capital.
  • Track credit card activity daily with respect to customer orders and Brand Partner ordering (this is effectively Minoan’s COGS): manage limits, prevent failures, and ensure optimal usage across payment partners.
  • Own client and vendor payment operations end to end: payment-method issues (ACH, credit card, Net Terms), exception handling (e.g., non-standard invoices, wire transfers), and ad hoc finance requests (e.g., tax receipts). Maintain healthy, timely accounts with Brand Partners and other suppliers, and own the relationship with our outsourced accountants on the AP cycle. You’ll be accountable for AP, not necessarily the one responsible for keying in every bill, as the team grows.
  • Own sales tax end to end (multi-state compliance and exemption certificates), franchise tax, and corporate tax filings in partnership with our accounting partners.
  • Oversee OpEx review and optimization: approve expenses, reduce waste, and ensure credit card transactions are categorized correctly on the P&L.
  • Support investor reporting, including quarterly board materials, investor updates, and 409A preparations.
  • Lead partnerships with external reporting parties (tax preparers, insurance brokers, and similar vendors) and handle the related financial documentation.
  • Lead projects that streamline financial operations and automate recurring tasks, e.g., better connecting QuickBooks to OpEx, COGS, Revenue, and Marketing ROI tracking, and build the foundational systems that let Minoan scale finance operations without reflexively adding headcount.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales and Growth, Operations, Marketing, Brand Partnerships, and Product. This role touches nearly every team at Minoan, and you’ll need to be as comfortable in a spreadsheet as you are in a room with a Brand Partner or Account Manager working through a non-standard payment.
  • As the function matures and the tactical work above is optimized, this role is expected to take on more strategic finance work, including cash flow extension, credit card/payment provider relationships, and eventually broader ownership of FP&A and strategic planning as the team scales.

Benefits

  • flexible PTO
  • health/vision/dental coverage
  • 401(k)
  • paid parental leave
  • generous equity
  • WFH office and equipment compensation up to $1,000
  • Free Minoan membership (access to discounts on 150+ brands)
