About The Position

Reporting to the VP, Finance & Corporate Reporting, the Senior Manager, Finance (Accounting Policy & Governance) serves as the enterprise authority on how accounting policies are operationalized across Extendicare. The role translates established accounting standards into consistent, scalable application within processes, systems, and controls, ensuring financial information is recorded accurately, consistently, and with strong governance. This role does not perform IFRS technical interpretation; rather, it ensures disciplined execution of approved accounting positions across the organization through clear standards, system design, and control frameworks. This position will be based at our Head Office in Markham, Ontario. Extendicare offers a hybrid working environment.

Requirements

  • CPA designation required.
  • 8–10 years progressive accounting experience, including multi-entity environments
  • Strong technical accounting foundation under IFRS (e.g. IFRS 16, IFRS 15, IFRS 18) and acquisition / consolidation accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to develop prescriptive policy memos and translate them into operational guidance
  • Experience with Workday Financials or comparable ERP (chart of accounts design, configuration, business processes)

Nice To Haves

  • CPA, CA designation as an asset.
  • healthcare, long-term care, or home care industry background is an asset
  • Experience working in large accounting firms in leadership roles or equivalent industry experience in technical accounting / policy
  • M&A integration or carve-out accounting experience is ideal.
  • Experience with government program accounting (MOH or provincial home care funding) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Translate technical accounting conclusions into enterprise accounting policies that define consistent methodologies and application across the organization
  • Develop and maintain accounting policy and application memos, including prescribed treatment, methodologies, journal entry logic, and system configuration
  • Translate accounting policies into practical guidance to support consistent application across the organization
  • Collaborate with business units to ensure alignment between day-to-day accounting practices and established policies
  • Provide clear and consistent resolution of accounting inquiries, with documented positions for future reference
  • Lead remediation efforts to address identified accounting inconsistencies or control gaps
  • Define and maintain core accounting structures and rules within financial systems to support policy adherence
  • Partner with Finance Systems to design controls, validations, and processes that promote compliance at the transaction level
  • Establish frameworks for intercompany accounting, eliminations, and segment reporting within system configurations
  • Specify accounting logic, posting rules, and reconciliation requirement
  • Lead accounting activities related to business integrations, including alignment of reporting structures, opening balances, and processes
  • Support mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic transactions from an accounting perspective, including due diligence and integration planning
  • Partner with internal stakeholders across finance, accounting, systems, and audit functions to support policy implementation and governance
  • Collaborate with External Reporting to ensure alignment between accounting treatment and financial disclosures
  • Work with Internal Audit to support the design and effectiveness of controls aligned with accounting policies
