Guidewire Software
•$162,000 - $258,000

About The Position

Guidewire’s Generative AI team, within Product Strategy, develops cloud and AI-powered capabilities for property and casualty insurers worldwide. The Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Generative AI, will lead the design, development, and operation of end-to-end GenAI solutions and large language model capabilities. The role owns key parts of the LLM infrastructure, including data pipelines, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, deployment, and production monitoring. The engineer will build production-grade AI solutions for insurance workflows and support Guidewire’s Agentic AI product vision. This includes developing and operating scalable ML/LLM pipelines, applying responsible AI and MLOps practices, and partnering across product, engineering, security, finance, and go-to-market functions. The role also includes technical leadership, mentoring, and helping deliver measurable customer outcomes. The position participates in Guidewire’s in-person orientation process.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to embrace AI and apply it in the current role, using data-driven insights to drive innovation, productivity, and continuous improvement.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in machine learning and/or data science, including end-to-end delivery of production ML systems.
  • Deep expertise in Python and experience building scalable ML/LLM services and pipelines, ideally using AWS services such as S3, EC2, RDS, and SageMaker.
  • Strong understanding of MLOps practices for model development, deployment, monitoring, and lifecycle management, including ML CI/CD, experiment tracking, model registries, and drift detection.
  • Hands-on experience with classical and gradient-boosting models such as GLM, Random Forest, and XGBoost, and applying them to business problems.
  • Deep understanding of neural networks and transformer-based architectures for LLMs and chat models, including familiarity with open-source foundation models, fine-tuning, and inference.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, RAG and related LLM architecture patterns, and vector databases for semantic search and retrieval.
  • Knowledge of evaluating and monitoring LLM performance using NLP and LLM-assisted metrics, with attention to safety, robustness, and user experience.
  • Technical leadership experience driving design decisions, leading complex engineering efforts, mentoring peers, and conducting code and architecture reviews.
  • Guidewire experience is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience building data pipelines and features using SQL, Spark, or AWS Glue.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes, and creating backend APIs to expose ML/LLM services.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code practices and tools such as TeamCity and Terraform.
  • Background in insurance, banking, or financial services, or interest in becoming deeply fluent in P&C insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of GenAI and LLM products, including data ingestion, feature pipelines, model training and fine-tuning, deployment, and monitoring on AWS.
  • Architect and build robust ML/LLM pipelines for use cases such as claim summarization, underwriting assistance, pricing and rating intelligence, and developer productivity.
  • Develop and optimize LLM solutions using prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, vector databases, and fine-tuning.
  • Collaborate with Product Strategy, PDO, and Professional Services to align GenAI capabilities with the product roadmap and customer adoption goals.
  • Establish and apply MLOps practices for CI/CD, experimentation, evaluation, observability, and responsible AI.
  • Ensure models are auditable, secure, and production-ready at scale.
  • Mentor and coach engineers and data scientists, conduct code and design reviews, and promote technical excellence, performance, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with Security, Finance, BizTech, and GTM teams to ensure AI solutions adhere to data governance and security controls.
  • Take ownership of one or more core GenAI platform components, such as data pipelines, evaluation frameworks, or an LLM-powered feature.
  • Lead the design and rollout of GenAI use cases across products, including Claims Summary, Underwriting Assistant, and developer tooling.
