About The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide technical expertise and practical working knowledge of structural inspection, load rating, and posting of bridges in administering the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and state statutes. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Senior Load Ratings Engineer. Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires occasional statewide travel which sometimes includes overnight stays.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of structural engineering with special emphasis on bridge design, construction, load rating, inspection, and maintenance.
  • Bridge Inspection Certification of Program Manager and/or Team Leader in the state of Illinois.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures accurate detailed plans, photographs, and sketches are produced for structural evaluation of local agency structures.
  • Performs structural capacity determination of local agency structures to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
  • Provides advice concerning bridge-related matters to district personnel and local agencies, consistent with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Monitors scheduling of inspections on a priority of need and most efficient use of manpower.
  • Provides expertise and instruction to district and local agency personnel concerning bridge inspection techniques and documentation.
  • Trains bridge inspection technicians to ensure well-developed and competent staff.
  • Reviews load ratings completed by consultants working for local agencies.
  • Performs load ratings for permit analysis and overlay requests.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
