About The Position

Work involves assisting the County Engineer in technical and administrative duties, and designing, planning, overseeing and inspecting various roadway and bridge construction and repair projects. The position may also perform direct supervisory responsibilities for the reviewing and assigning of work of the Engineering Assistants.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Certification as Engineering Intern by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors in the State of Alabama.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Construction and maintenance experience, specifically roadway resurfacing and paving.
  • Working knowledge of Microstation Software.
  • Various ALDOT certifications such as ACI Field Inspection, Nuclear Gauge Safety, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, plans, oversees and inspects roadway construction, maintenance and repair projects.
  • Assists the County Engineer in a technical and administrative capacity as needed.
  • Coordinates, oversees and inspects utility relocations in conjunction with highway construction projects.
  • Performs drainage research and calculations.
  • Performs research regarding drainage and flood information, traffic studies and other related information.
  • Assists with annual project planning and ensures projects are within budget.
  • Aids in planning and supervising Shelby County’s annual paving contract.
  • Works with the other Engineers to determine which roads will be resurfaced and what type of surface each will receive.
  • Performs various field tasks such as locating, surveying, staking and construction layout.
  • Assist with project cost estimating and quantity takeoffs.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.
