About The Position

Join the City of Richmond Aquatics team and help create a safe, welcoming, and exceptional experience for patrons who enjoy the City's year-round indoor aquatic facilities. This is a permanent part-time opportunity. Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Senior Lifeguard oversees the daily operations and activities of the City's aquatic facilities and programs. This position serves as a lead staff member, providing guidance, training, and mentorship to part-time Lifeguards while ensuring a safe, efficient, and customer-focused environment. The Senior Lifeguard applies advanced knowledge of water safety, emergency response, and rescue techniques; oversees pool cash-handling procedures and program registration systems; and delivers outstanding customer service to patrons of all ages. In addition, this position plans and conducts regular in-service lifeguard training sessions, monitors staff performance and compliance with safety standards, and coordinates daily operations to maximize the efficient use of the City's aquatic facilities. The hourly salary for this classification is as high as $26.36 at the top step, with approved Cost of Living Adjustments on July 1, 2027 (5%).

Requirements

  • One (1) year of college or university work in recreation, physical education, or a related field
  • Two (2) years of lifeguard experience, or the equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Current Lifeguard training certification
  • American Red Cross Head Lifeguard certification or equivalent
  • Current First Aid and CPR for Public Safety Personnel in accordance with Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations
  • Knowledge of: Lifeguarding, first aid, public safety and the role of the professional rescuer
  • Knowledge of Rules and regulations of an aquatic facility
  • Knowledge of Swimming rescue techniques, CPR and first aid
  • Knowledge of Accident prevention and accident management
  • Knowledge of Intervention and conflict resolution strategies
  • Knowledge of Legal duty to perform
  • Knowledge of Instruction techniques and materials related to aquatic activities
  • Knowledge of Special issues associated with conducting activities for citizens possessing a wide variety of physical and mental abilities
  • Knowledge of Team building techniques and supervision of lifeguards
  • Knowledge of Methods of program evaluation and performance evaluation
  • Knowledge of Health and safety regulations
  • Knowledge of Current methods and standards for lifeguarding facilities
  • Ability to Swim with proficiency and endurance
  • Ability to Perform and assist rescues
  • Ability to Enforce the rules and regulations of an aquatic facility
  • Ability to Perform CPR and first aid
  • Ability to Work a flexible schedule including holidays, nights, and weekends
  • Ability to Work indoors and outdoors in a variety of temperatures
  • Ability to Use vision and hearing to identify and evaluate field emergencies, and to respond physically to these emergencies quickly and appropriately
  • Ability to Communicate effectively in writing and verbally with personnel and the public, in both routine operations and emergency situations
  • Ability to Develop and implement aquatic programs for a variety of skill levels
  • Ability to Provide leadership, direction and training of lifeguard personnel

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties and responsibilities related to the building and leading of a lifeguard team
  • Scheduling and supervising lifeguard staff
  • Leading team building and in-service skills training
  • Performing lifeguard duties and other related duties as required
  • Monitor, direct, and evaluate lifeguard personnel
  • Assists with recruiting, interviewing, and scheduling lifeguard personnel
  • Monitor activities to prevent accidents; educate and direct swimmers regarding unsafe behavior; recognize and respond to emergencies; rescue swimmers in distress; and provide first aid care for medical emergencies, injury, and sudden illness that may include heart attack, bleeding, spinal injury, or drowning
  • Maintain simple records and reports
  • Perform related duties as assigned
