About The Position

Performs a variety of duties, including the delivery of advanced library services; supervises the activities of subordinate staff; manages operations in a branch or department; does related work as required. Highly developed skills, knowledge, and technical ability may be utilized within defined areas of expertise. A broad base of general knowledge of literature or nonfiction and/or a thorough knowledge of a subject area or areas is needed for the advanced delivery of services. Pronounced proficiency in standard library techniques is required. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with the public in a customer service environment.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of English, spelling and arithmetic.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions in the performance of routine tasks.
  • Ability to perform standard reference research and reader’s advisory work.
  • Advanced knowledge of literature or nonfiction subject areas and other materials of interest to the public.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service for patrons of all ages.
  • Ability to develop a working knowledge of automated systems and related appropriate databases.
  • Ability to assume primary operational responsibility for various functions, divisions, and facilities on a routine basis.
  • Ability to direct the activities of subordinate staff.
  • Proficiency using and troubleshooting common software and hardware.
  • Subject to a complete criminal history background search with acceptable results.
  • Must also be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the daily operation of a branch library or department; assumes responsibility for operation of a facility or unit in the absence of management staff.
  • Routinely supervises library personnel; directs daily activities; actively participates in the evaluation, development, and training of staff.
  • Plans and delivers library programming, and participates in systemwide program development.
  • Assists with activities related to the marketing and promotion of library materials and services.
  • Participates in community outreach events.
  • Provides circulation related services including: registering borrowers, charging, renewing, or discharging materials, placing requests, receiving the payment of fines and fees, etc.
  • Manages public computer usage, provides assistance with public computer workstations.
  • Provides reader’s advisory and reference service for patrons.
  • Assists patrons with library equipment such as public computers, printer/copiers, fax machines, and catalog computers.
  • Assists patrons with personal devices such as smart phones, tablets, and laptops.
  • Monitors operations for quality assurance.
  • Assists in the development of branch and system-wide goals, policies and objectives.
  • Utilizes judgment and knowledge to solve operational and service problems or resolve conflicts; interprets and applies policy.
  • Develops service enhancements.
  • Participates in team projects, assuming a leadership role as required.
  • Participates in collection development and collection maintenance activities; shares responsibility for achieving collection development objectives.
  • Exercises advanced knowledge of automated systems operations, including troubleshooting and resolving technology issues.
  • Gathers statistics and prepares reports.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with County employees, vendors, customers, and the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
