About The Position

The Library Assistant will provide assistance to a diverse population of customers in using library resources. Assistance is given to customers in person, via phone, and via email. These resources include, but are not limited to: printed materials, digital media, online databases, internet searches, faxing, copying, and printing. The Library Assistant will also assist in the day-to-day functions of the Library – checking in/out materials, shelving books, opening/closing duties, creating/updating member records, etc.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school degree (or equivalent).
  • Computer proficiency is required.
  • Customer service experience required.
  • Must enjoy working with a team.

Nice To Haves

  • College experience is preferred.
  • Previous library experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties related to checking in and checking out library materials, including using the ILS computer database and collecting fees.
  • Performs direct customer service duties to all library members and users, in-person, via email or by phone.
  • Creates and updates member records.
  • Checks returned materials for good condition, completeness and other shelving requirements, and changes their status in the ILS computer database.
  • Shelves returned materials.
  • Assists members with locating materials, physical and digital, using the ILS database, including eBooks, eReaders, OPACs, and Inter Library Loan.
  • Assists members with the use of computer applications including the Internet, digital devices, and online databases, making referrals to Member Services as needed.
  • Assists members with public computer use and answers general computer, email, printing, and internet questions.
  • Makes photocopies and scans and emails documents using a photocopier.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures, including light cleaning, ensuring the appearance of the desk area, shelving units, and sitting areas are neat, clean, and organized.
  • Informs members of Library policies and rules, enforces them, and completes incident reports.
  • Provides guidance to volunteers and assists them when needed.
  • Other duties as requested by the Library Supervisor.
