The location in Montreal, (Quebec, Canada), is seeking talent to fill the position of Senior Legal Counsel - Commercial Law. This job is full-time permanent. The Legal Counsel is responsible in providing legal services and advising the Wood Products Business Unit personnel from various departments and facilities related to the Unit’s activities and operations, ensuring that the Unit and the Paper Excellence Group’s objectives and interests are protected and furthered, as well as carried out in a manner that is in conformity with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited law school and member of the Quebec bar.
  • Must be fluent in French and English (both in writing and orally).
  • At least 5 years of experience in the related areas with a law firm or company legal department.
  • Hybrid work environment with a physical presence based out of the Montreal, QC office.
  • Occasional travel for in-person meetings with the other in-house attorneys, internal clients and stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of forestry, natural resources, environment and/or international trade is a plus.
  • Prior in-house experience in or related to the pulp and paper industry is a plus.
  • Senior Legal Counsel (10 years +) with the relevant qualifications located in other regions across Quebec (e.g. Québec City, Saguenay–Lac‑Saint‑Jean, Mauricie, Eastern Townships, Outaouais). In such a case, the candidate must be able to travel to Montreal as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal services and support related to contractual matters such as procurement/sales matters, including the drafting, negotiation and revising of procurement/sales agreements.
  • Manage litigation matters of the Unit with the support of external counsels if needed.
  • Work on general commercial matters related to the Unit.
  • Provide legal support on projects of group-wide importance (such as restructurings, significant mill projects and M&A).
  • Provide legal advice and training related to compliance and policy matters for the Unit.
