About The Position

Citi is looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join its Investment Banking and Corporate Banking (IBCB) technology division — a globally distributed, cross-functional team building the platforms and tools that power some of the world's most complex financial operations. In this hands-on role, you will design and develop scalable full stack applications using a modern tech stack including Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, GraphQL, and Angular, directly solving real challenges faced by banking professionals worldwide. With a 70/30 split favoring backend Java development, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful technical impact within a team that values engineering rigor, collaborative delivery, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• 6 or more years of full stack development experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java backend engineering as the primary technical discipline.
• Deep proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, including the design and delivery of microservices-based, production-grade backend systems.
• Solid experience building frontend applications with Angular, including in-depth knowledge of JavaScript and functional programming patterns.
• Practical experience with messaging and data technologies including Kafka, GraphQL, and NoSQL databases.
• Demonstrated ability to apply DevSecOps principles, security-first development practices, and CI/CD tooling throughout the software development lifecycle.
• Experience writing and maintaining comprehensive UI tests, with a consistent focus on quality and reliability.
• Ability to work effectively with limited direct supervision, take end-to-end ownership of deliverables, and operate confidently in an agile development environment.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with financial services technology environments, particularly within investment banking or capital markets platforms.
• Experience contributing to architectural decisions, including reviewing and improving system design at scale.
• A track record of mentoring engineers and leading technical review processes such as code reviews or design evaluations.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop robust, scalable backend services and APIs using Java and Spring Boot, serving as the primary technical contributor across a 70/30 Java-to-Angular full stack environment.
• Build and maintain Angular-based frontend interfaces that deliver intuitive, high-quality experiences to banking professionals.
• Implement DevSecOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) best practices to architect solutions that are secure, resilient, and production-ready.
• Advocate for engineering excellence across the full software development lifecycle, applying sound design principles and modern CI/CD practices from development through to deployment.
• Assess existing applications to identify areas of technical complexity, surface potential risks, and recommend targeted improvements to architecture or process.
• Collaborate with project stakeholders to clarify requirements, communicate technical approaches clearly, and keep delivery aligned with user needs.
• Mentor fellow engineers through code reviews, design reviews, and technical documentation reviews to ensure consistent delivery quality across the team.
