About The Position

Services Australia is seeking a Java Developer to provide specialist development capability for COMPASS CMIS enhancements supporting CPU Right-Sizing and related capacity management automation. The role works with Senior Capacity Manager(s), the Capacity Planning Services team, and Service Management & Self-Healing Automation Project stakeholders to analyse, design, build, test and support these enhancements. It extends COMPASS application components, data collectors, database interfaces and design, dashboards, and reporting so utilisation data can be collected, aggregated, analysed and presented for operational decision-making. The developer oversees software development work, writes optimised code and provides technical leadership to software engineers, with responsibility for the quality and functionality of the team's software. The work includes integrating capacity data sources, supporting data processing and PostgreSQL storage, enabling Grafana dashboards and reports, and helping deliver reliable capacity reporting and forecasting. The position also supports defect resolution, release activities, technical documentation, knowledge transfer, platform coverage expansion, improved data quality and operational self-service reporting. The role is based in Victoria. The first two weeks are full-time onsite; a hybrid work arrangement, usually requiring at least two onsite days per week, may then be considered from the employee's capital city. The 12-month contract may be extended up to a maximum of 24 months. An active Negative Vetting 1 security clearance is required. The advertised rate is $100–$130 per hour, inclusive of superannuation.

  • Practical knowledge of Linux, Windows Server, Tomcat, JDK/JRE, Maven, Git/GitLab and deployment practices across development, test and production environments.
  • Experience integrating monitoring, capacity or observability data from tools such as Grafana, Elastic, Prometheus, VMware Aria, Dynatrace or equivalent data repositories.
  • Ability to develop and support automation scripts, data collectors, scheduled jobs and repeatable deployment or operational processes.
  • Ability to work with capacity planners, platform teams, database administrators, Linux engineers, project delivery teams and business stakeholders to confirm requirements and validate outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to document technical designs, support arrangements, implementation steps and knowledge-transfer material for sustainable handover.
  • Knowledge of technology domain frameworks, legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of relevant business systems and tools.

  • Professional presentation skills.
  • Ability to monitor emerging technologies, assess and document organisational impacts, threats and opportunities, and share findings and insights (SFIA Emerging technology monitoring, Level 5).
  • Ability to advise on, select, implement and review methods and tools in line with policies and standards (SFIA Methods and tools, Level 5).
  • Ability to take technical responsibility for software development, plan and drive construction activities, and monitor standards including software security (SFIA Programming/software development, Level 5).
  • Ability to lead release assessment, planning and design; coordinate release communications; conduct post-release reviews; and manage release procedures, rollback and deployment techniques (SFIA Release and deployment, Level 5).
  • Ability to take technical responsibility for software configuration development and deployment, plan activities and monitor standards, including software security (SFIA Software configuration, Level 5).
  • Ability to design complex software applications, components and modules; evaluate design options and trade-offs; communicate design views; and review designs (SFIA Software design, Level 4).
  • Ability to provide detailed specialist advice, maintain specialist knowledge and recognise the boundaries of that expertise (SFIA Specialist advice, Level 4).
  • Ability to design large or complex systems, assess design options and risks, balance functional and non-functional requirements, and review systems designs (SFIA Systems design, Level 5).
