About The Position

FinDev Canada is seeking a talented Senior Investment Officer, Funds for its new South Africa branch in Cape Town. This role is part of the growing organization's commitment to positively impact climate and nature action, gender equality, and market development by working with and through the private sector. The position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic team and contribute to development finance and global impact. The Investments Team manages and expands FinDev Canada's portfolio of direct and indirect investments, focusing on business development, transaction processing, and asset management to meet portfolio growth targets. The Senior Investment Officer will build and maintain client and partner relationships to create a pipeline of bankable transactions within the Funds sector, contributing to the evolution of FinDev Canada's practices and processes.

Requirements

  • Chartered Accountant or completed CFA, MBA, or MSc in Finance (or related) preferred.
  • 9-12 years relevant experience in investment banking, private equity, or development finance institutions, with investment experience in financial intermediaries.
  • Experience in investment transactions, with proven success in developing client relationships as well as sourcing, negotiating, structuring and closing quality investments.
  • Robust financial and credit skills; sound business judgment, modelling skills and demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments.
  • Proven ability to work independently and deliver promptly and efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the sub-region and internationally.
  • Must be able to work legally in Canada at the time of application (Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents).
  • Must meet the requisite government security screening requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Investment experience in one or more of the following sectors: renewable energy and climate finance, infrastructure, Agri supply chains, financial intermediaries.
  • Experience working in emerging markets.
  • Private equity fund experience and experience participating in co-investments.
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, originate, and develop new investment opportunities in the Private Equity Funds sector.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients, partners, fund managers, and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop a robust pipeline of investable opportunities.
  • Lead the full transaction lifecycle, including origination, due diligence, structuring, negotiation, investment recommendation, closing, and monitoring.
  • Assess transaction risks and present recommendations to internal stakeholders and committees.
  • Negotiate commercial terms and documentation.
  • Actively manage a portfolio of fund investments and client relationships.
  • Monitor fund performance and emerging risks.
  • Validate draw down requests and monitor compliance with legal agreements.
  • Prepare quarterly valuation reports.
  • Conduct annual portfolio reviews and recommend mitigating actions where required.
  • Lead or contribute towards active LP engagements with Fund Managers to mitigate transactions risks.
  • Drive proactive client engagement and asset management activities.
  • Engage regularly with senior management and internal stakeholders across FinDev Canada.
  • Represent FinDev Canada at industry conferences and events.
  • Mentor and coach junior investment professionals.
